PHNOM PENH, Dec 26, 2006 (AFP) - A 52-year-old French bar owner has been sentenced to six years in prison for running a brothel in Cambodia that catered to foreign men, a court official said Tuesday.
Bruno Fumat, 52, received the jail term at the Phnom Penh Municipal Court Monday, the official said. His 32-year-old Cambodian girlfriend, who helped run the brothel, also got six years.
The French national, who is at hospital for a minor illness, rejected the ruling and was considering appealing to a higher court, his lawyer said.
Cambodia has struggled for years to curtail its sex trade, mainly by cracking down on suspected paedophiles.
