Commitment Needed To End Gang Violence

Letter to the Editor
The Cambodia Daily

Samdech Prime Minister Hun Sen has ordered district, provincial, and municipal governors to take tough action against gangsters, ("Hun Sen Warns Officials To Get Tough On Gangs," Wednesday, page 1).

This is a great news for the public. It is not easy for governors to crack down on gangsters but it is not impossible if officials are committed. Friday's page 1 article "Prey Veng Teen Shot Dead by Security Officials" featured a sad and shocking story about to Cambodian officials opening fire on unarmed civilians over a land dispute.

This is intolerable and inhumane. Security forces are obliged to ensure security for the public. But what can we do if police or security forces act like gangs?

The government not only needs to crack down on young gangsters but also on its own bad officials. Our country does not need gangsters working in any position.
