Concerning the warning by Hun Sen, the "package" prime minister of the Phnom Penh government who repeatedly and unreasonably talked about the possibility of a military coup, Sam Rainsy, president of the Sam Rainsy Party [SRP], expressed great surprise at this strongman's frequent mention of a military coup.
Moreover, Sam Rainsy claimed that no one is going to stage any coup to overthrow Hun Sen from power because all the armed forces are in the prime minister's hands. Therefore, Sam Rainsy said he did not understand why Hun Sen kept talking about a military coup. SRP president Sam Rainsy said, "I do not understand either why the prime minister is afraid of a military coup when the military, military police, and police forces are all in his hands."
In Kandal province at the ceremony inaugurating a stone bridge Hun Sen repeatedly vociferated that he would not allow any military coup to take place during his term of power.
It should be recalled that last month Hun Sen also loudly threatened to crush any coup staged in the form of people power. He said that if there was any attempt to use the people power to topple him, he would also use the power of the people who support him to fight back.
SRP president Sam Rainsy said that our country is at peace; no one wants to stage any military coup; no one wants bloodshed.
Sam Rainsy further stressed that with the armed forces of all types in the hands of the current ruler, he did not believe that anyone would want to defeat Hun Sen through such a risky way as staging a military coup.
Meanwhile, non-government observers carefully weighed all the possibilities before saying that the Cambodian People's Party [CPP] is now in control of the National Assembly, the Senate, and the Royal Government, and the soldiers, military police, and civilian police are under the command of those belonging to the CPP; therefore, whose forces would want to stage a military coup? Or is Hun Sen afraid that his own forces might stage a military coup?
Concerning the problems inside the CPP, whose unity Hun Sen has always claimed to be stronger than ever, people say that there is also severe disagreement inside the CPP.
As a matter of fact, faced with almost a year-long political deadlock following the 2003 elections, Hun Sen and Prince Ranariddh conspired to add a provision to the constitution allowing a package vote to form the National Assembly and the government at the same time.
Although Hun Sen in his capacity as the CPP's vice president was in cahoots with Prince Ranariddh, Chea Sim as the CPP's president and acting head of state tried to avoid signing the constitutional addendum to the point that Hun Sen needed to send his forces to surround Chea Sim's residence and the Senate building in a bid to coerce Chea Sim into signing that appendix to the constitution.
Because Chea Sim knew that this constitutional supplement betrayed his ideal, he refused to sign it. Later, Chea Sim used an excuse to go abroad and handed over his authority to Prince Sisowath Chivoan Monirak to head the Senate in his absence.
However, Prince Sisowath Chivoan Monirak, too, did not dare to sign it, and he handed over the authority as acting head of state to Nhiek Bun Chhay, who promptly signed it to permit the package vote.
In this package vote, many circles suspected that probably it was because Hun Sen was not confident that the CPP would support his prime-ministerial candidacy that he sought all means to have the vote for the formation of the National Assembly and of the government held at the same time.
Hun Sen's uneasiness about a military coup against him could come from seeing his buddy, former Thai prime minister Thaksin, recently deposed in a military coup staged by Thai military leaders. Subsequently, Hun Sen kept making threats against any military coup attempt.
However, Sam Rainsy underscored that no one is going to stage a military coup to overthrow Hun Sen because at this juncture the armed forces have all been placed under Hun Sen's control alone. Therefore, Hun Sen was probably aiming at something else when he talked about this military coup.
Sam Rainsy said that our country is at peace now; no one wants any more bloodshed. So, there is no sense worrying about it.
Analysts in all circles say that Hun Sen should not be afraid of such a military coup. What Hun Sen should clearly see is that the people would use their power to show their will through the ballots in order to overthrow Hun Sen from power.
This is because the people know that through military struggle no one can oust Hun Sen, but through the ballots Hun Sen is very vulnerable. That is why he keeps making noisy threats about a military coup.

It's just a matter of time, no matter you allow it or not? You should look around the world, asshole. Kou(bull) dambout knong, Ka-ek(crow) hai romlong rumsai kantuy?
It is true. I agree with Sam Rainsy 100% that there will be no military coup against Hun Sen at all because all Cambodian military leaders are so stupid and no National conscience. They are all working blindly with Hun sen. Cambodian have suffered too long already by this kind of Military. This military is very good in killing and destroying their own forest. Cambodian Army of Lon Nol regime were the best National army because they have fight until their last breath to protect Cambodia. China and Thailand, are both have the best military leaders. Their military leaders have the best education from their military academic. Unlike in Cambodia all military leaders have got their job by paying monies and have no military training properly. Let forget about Cambodian military to save Cambodian Nation!!!!!

He is so worry and afraid because in his heart ,he knew his government is so corrupted and people can't put up with it any longer.
THERE WERE BRUTAL DICTATORS IN THE WORLD BEFORE HUN SEN. MARCO, SURHARTO, SADAM HUSEIN JUST TO NAME A FEW, WERE GONE FOREVER. THOSE MEN I MENTIONED ABOVE WERE MUCH MORE POWERFUL THAN HUN SEN, BUT FINALLY THEY WERE OUSTED BY PEOPLE'S POWER. HUN SEN KNEW ONE DAY HE WILL BE GONE LIKE THOSE BRUTAL DICTORS BEFORE HIM. IN ORDER FOR HIM TO BE IN POWER FOR A LONG TIME, HE SHOULD CHANGE HIS STRATEGY HOW TO RULE CAMBODIA. HUN SEN WILL BE WIPED OUT OFCAMBODIA ONE DAY.
Honestly I don’t want to see another bloodbath. The outcome are usually the same and the consequences are the lost of innocent lives. History repeats itself therefore before any coup takes place we have to have a common goals and direction. Think about it, after Hun Sen’s over thrown who will lead us? Everyone will want power and money is power. We’ll probably be in a worst situation than we are. Right now it isn’t the right time. There are a lot of considerations to be made. Don’t want this to be like Mr. Bush and Iraq. But I’m glad to hear there are voices in the air.
Hello 4:59 Poster. You must be a very dump person needing to be led. everyone can be the leader as long as you have the mandate to lead. Military should be very independent and assist the national to maintain freedom and liberty. If there is a lead corrupted like HUn Sen, Military leader must dare to say NO NO NO NO you must go, so that the Nation can move forward. If a blind man like hun sen can lead Cambodia, any monky can lead Cambodia better than him.
This is just another propaganda started by Hun Sen.. He will use this excuse to abolished the election or he will creat a coup and blame the opposition for it... This is a paranoid man who will say anything do anything to stay in power. If he's out of a job, so will hundreds of others who got into high position through him.
Hun Sen is a weak man...that's why he uses strong words to hide his cowardness. I will predict that as the election draws near, there will be a coup or distruption of some type. AND of course we who lives in free democracy country can look inside the windows of Cambodia and see who is instigator. Ordinary Cambodian are too busy trying to surive day to day. The government knows this, that's why the government doesn't do anything about it... survival is a distraction from the truth.
It is very unfortunated for Cambodian people to have their worst King and worst leadership in the 20 and 21 centuries. Their worst King such as Sihanouk and Sihamony are father and son and have always associated with all bad leaders in Cambodia and abroad. Even they have chance to associated with good leaders in foreign countries, they won't learn the good spirits but they copied all bad tradition and bad customs like North Korea. In their own country, these bad Kind have only associated with their bad ministers. Eg Sihanouk was very good with all bad one in his regime and then good with Pol pot , Khiev samphann and Hun Sen, But he was very bad relationship with lon Nol, Son Sann etc.. who were good leaders. Very unfortunated as well all Cambodian scholas are so self fish. They don't care the wellfare of their people. So, We hope heaven to help Cambodian people from these very bad times.
Hun Sen is keen, manipulative, and wity in his every move in order to stay on the throne. So, he is going around the communist neighbors for building up the support. And those communist countries we're all know about it.
With the Black Gold is about to be flowing, they aren't willing to lose Hun Sen from the seat. And many Khmers will suffer for a mellenium more. What we need is a Real Democracy, not a one man state?
This dog will has his day. Now he keeps on barking to scare people off.
Anonymous 2:35 AM,
I was in Cambodia during Lon Nol's era. His 5 years regime was the most corrupted among all Khmer leaders. His military officers especially his brother Lon Non cheated the payroll collecting thousands of dead soldiers' salaries. Lon Nol's officers sold weapons to Viet Cong & KR untill the war was lost. Just two things out of hundreds of corruptions from 1970-1975. Imagin if he continues to lead the country until now?
Hello 9:55AM,
We all know that corruption is bad for the country and we all denounce them all. But at least, in Lon Nol regime, all their military haven't destroyed all our forests, haven't stolen our people land. In this regime of Hun Sen, all military leaders area also making monies from ghorst soldiers, but worst than that, they destroyed Cambodia as a whole.Hun Sen regime is the worst in Khmer history. They have agenda to expell all Cambodians from their homeland and become beggers in neighbour countries. If you didn't take this attention, Cambodians will soon disappear from Khmer land.
All we can do is wait...be patient and watch happens. If we really hate this person that bad, ask yourself...do the people of Cambodia hate him as much? They dont care whats going on...they are only worried about what to eat the next day. The rich who control Kampuchea are not Khmer but foreigners. What I am saying is not racist, but very true. My question to all who read this is, do you want a Cambodia in the future?
To11:21am
Oh God! Yes we do! Someone from inside The Hung Zen's government ought to do the job, if no one from the outside dare to do it.
Let's make it happen!!!!!!!!
To the anonymous person who may have missed understood me. My apology. You’re absolutely correct in stating, “Military should be very independent and assist the national to maintain freedom and liberty…” When I had stated, “… who will lead us?” With this I meant to say what established opposing form of government or representatives would move our country forward into the future? Do we wait to form a democratic government? I fear our country will be in a state of anarchy if that’s the case. Not our exile King and the opposing political representatives. They will clash with the currently military coup should they decide to return.
There would be two possiblities behind his warning:
1-the first one: I agree with 6:09, the 500 rielstoilet. It's a signal in advance, so if at any point of time Hun Sen needs to use military to keep power (eg. if he predicts he could lose election), he will blame of coup d'etat, then crack down. In this case he prepares himself the coup to show public.
2- there might be real warning against his rival within his own party. Over these 13 years, more and more people from his link are posted while those from Chea Sim, Sar Kheng and Say Chhum are progressively marginalised. I remember how Chea Sim was escorted to Thailand few years ago. They are not satisfied with him. So the conflict might be more intense. Then Hun Sen is trying to show his muscles in advance in the hope that his rival is afraid and stop willing to topple him.
Thank god we have good cambodia here. it doesnt matter who cambodia leader is. we are small country and we have a lot of pressure for around us. China, viet, thai, Lao, us. all they want is little piecs of cambodia land, ladies, children, men, forest, you name it they want it.it doesnt who the leader is ,because we are the weakest in mankind. that includ all khmer inside and outside. look at khmer children in us how many are belong to gangs, they kill only khmer , they dont go to school, i live in minnesota there are not many cambodia engineering. i work for emerson company and there is not one cambodia supervisor or engineering here. where are the khmer leader? tell your kids to studies and watch their back later. love k
From Hun Sen's mouth but it is straight of the Vietnamese Propaganda plan. Hun Sen did the Coup in 1997 and he was on Helicopter to Vietnam. PHD from his Nut University, Hun Sen does exactly just what the Vietnamese tell him to do. You get to understand, all the dictators will not give up power. If they lost power they will be dead.
