Hun Sen: Success Responsible for Lengthy Tenure
By Yun Samean
THE CAMBODIA DAILY
Prime Minister Hun Sen on Monday said that he had served the longest of all Cambodia's leaders and boasted that his achievement in developing the country was the secret to his lengthy political tenure.
Political observers, however, said that economic development was not the only measure of a healthy society and that a change in leadership was also beneficial for a country.
"In a few days, I will have served 22 years in the Prime Minister's office," Hun Sen said in a speech broadcast on radio.
"If I include minister and deputy prime minister, it's 28 years in power. And if I start from the beginning of the political movement it's 37 years," he said.
Under the People's Republic of Kampuchea, Hun Sen became prime minister Jan 14, 1985.
Hun Sen continued: "The issue is whether I have made [Cambodia] go forward or backward. If I led the country backward, I could not be standing here and I could not have defeated Pol Pot."
Without Jan 7, 1979—the day that Vietnamese-backed forces toppled the Khmer Rouge and placed an earlier incarnation of Hun Sen's CPP in power—there would not have been the 1991 Paris Peace Accords and the subsequent re-emergence of Cambodia, the prime minister added.
Hang Puthea. director of the Neutral and Impartial Committee for Free and Fair Elections, said history shows changes in leadership to be beneficial.
"World experience shows that changing leadership is better," he said, adding that Cambodian history also proved that dictum.
"If we compare [it] to Pol Pot's regime, [Hun Sen's ] regime is better."
Lao Mong Hay, senior researcher at the Asian Human Rights Commission in Hong Kong, said he was not convinced that the current government was a net positive.
"Social and judicial reform has been very slow," he said, adding that impunity and corruption persisted while the public remained under-served by their leaders.

Hun Sen develop for their own families and his partsan only not for Cambodian people. Do you think Khmer people want you to sit in Prime Minister post? Every time you always talk non-sense to the public. Most of people don't want to listen to you, except YUAN. Why you born in Cambodia, you should born in Vietnam or Laos.
I just have to laugh at the statement made by Hun Sen in his radio address ... the over usage of "Jan 7th" is so over rated it's so "last year." He's the liberator ... yet people in Cambodia are still in shackles, poverty and corruption is rampant, useless laws, opression of the opposition and freedom of expression and speech ... he calls that "achievement?"
"achievement in developing the country"
I have seen none what so ever, we're more of the laughing stock of Asia. His attitude stinks and he doesn't sound very humble at all ... quoting himself as the Cambodian leader serving the longest term ... yeah through corruption, schemeing, plotting and intimidation. But how long Hun Sen ... how long will you last in power, like my religious grandmother would say people who do good well receive good, people who do bad things will eventually get bad things coming. Hun Sen ... oh it will come to you, when you least expect it ... bad things comes to a violent end.
Vietnam Conspiracy: Created Khmer rouge, created spies (Hun Sen) vs. Pol Pot, invaded Cambodia then said liberated her, created new Khmer rouge again. Now Hun Sen claimed he is a champion after he gave Khmer land to Vietnamese.
Sihanouk said the same he was a nationalist but he helped the Vietnamese.
Time to go Mr. Hun Sen! You are there long enough and too long. WE saw mold grew out of you butt and get out!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hun Sen said "If I include minister and deputy prime minister, it's 28 years in power. And if I start from the beginning of the political movement it's 37 years,".
Hun Sen whispered "And I can't count how many Cambodians killed by me during that 37 years. You all can count on me that I would expect more to come in further years, if there are more power struggling with me."
I am abolutely agreed with Lao Mong Hay and Hang Puthea. Hun Sen is an ass leader. He doesn't know what is good and what is bad for his country and it is expected of him with his limited education. He is almost 50 and he has yet matured and looks like it will take some time. Do your best my poor compatriots! The dog will has its day.
It is very unfortunated that Cabodia has a leader who has no love for its people. He served the longest as a priminster in Cambodian history. He is so proud of himself. What is the purpose of having served as the longest priminister with corruptions, poverty, disorder ? It does not makes any sense of becoming a leader who has no vision leading the country. Hun Sen makes history, but a bad history that Cambodia does not want to learn.
Who else gonna praise this idiot.. but himself... he has a lot of mental problem..this guy is the Hitler of Cambodia. Becuase that's what Hitler did.
He may be an idiot. But how about the people who allow him to be idiotic?
^^^
If it is true and fair. No one I said no one will vote for this asshole HUN SEN. He keeps Cambodians poor so he can minipulate, bribe, scare them for his advantage. He is a thief. He stole our future too.
Hun Sen,
Cambodia is a very old country...
Whilst during Pol Pot regime it accelerated the killing of it millions of Khmer people.
Under your leadership you have accelerate the distruction of the counrty identities and natural resources that our ancestor have protected.
Now there is fewer trees, Angkor temple falling appart, people are starving due to your government corruptions...what an achievements.
I hope the CPP will one day very soon have a NEW LEADER to lead cambodia into real prosperity not a fake one.
NEW LEADER mean new idea..your Hun Sen are too old, out-of-date and worn out! you need to retire old man.
