Local authorities in Banteay Meanchey province's O'Chrou district said Sunday that a land dispute may have led to last week's fatal shooting of a village chiefs secretary. O'Chrou district police chief Oeng Song You said the victim, Hoem Saroath, was shot eight times with an AK-47 assault rifle shortly after 7 pm on Dec 20 while he was talking in front of village chief Chea Vanny's house in Tumnup Dach village. Police believe the victim was shot by hired killers working on behalf of a third party, said Oeng Song You, adding that police have a suspect and are working to find evidence. Village chief Chea Vanny said that his secretary had no enemies but both had recently been involved in an acrimonious dispute over land with a local farmer. Hoem Saroath's wife Kve Chhoeun said Sunday she had no doubt that the killing was an act of revenge related to the land dispute. "One day before my husband died, he told me, 'If I am killed, it will relate to a land dispute,'" she said.
