"We have always been very, very
forward-looking to ... gender equality."
—Mu Sochua,
Candidate for SRP Secretary-General
The Sam Rainsy Party steering committee votes today on whether former Minister of Women's Affairs Mu Sochua will become the party's new secretary-general.
If Mu Sochua gets the job, it will make her the first woman to hold such a high-ranking position in a major Cambodian political party, said Hang Puthea, executive director of the Neutral and Impartial Committee for Free Elections in Cambodia.
SRP leader Sam Rainsy said Sunday that he put forward Mu Sochua's name to the party's steering committee to replace current acting Secretary-General Meng Rita, who is leaving to join his family in the US. Secretary-general is the third highest position within the party, Sam Rainsy said.
Sam Rainsy said that Mu Sochua was his choice for the role for many reasons and that she was well equipped to be the SRP’s public relations focal point.
Mu Sochua said that her nomination demonstrates the SRP’s commitment to gender equality inside the party.
"We have always been very, very forward-looking to the balance of power—gender equality," she said. "This is proof that the Sam Rainsy Party is true to its word."
She added, however, that she believed her nomination was based on her competence as a politician, and not as a political statement regarding gender.
Hang Puthea said that Mu Sochua would likely be a good fit for the position.
"She has a good record working at the grassroots level," he said.
Mu Sochua joined the SRP in August 2004 after defecting from Funcinpec, where she held the rank of minister of Women's Affairs and had been a member since 1995.

There goes Raingsy cronyism, why Meng Rita quit? Raingsy had never intented for the man to have that job since Chhai Eang screwed around with party secret safe.
He's more secure if new Secretary and wife spend nights away from home. His scret safe won't be tampered with.
What a set up,like people don't know.
Good comments, and also logical, but if you like criticizing people, let's do in a constructive way. Do not look down on or be always jealous at others.
That's not helping if critic can't say what's real. One who defends wrong doing is slowly assuring opponent success. Sincere intent is rarely favorable nevertheless either wwallow pride or do proper thing.
Critic cares to point out flaws unlike meaningless praises from blindfolded fanatic.
The truth is critic lost no sleep but the pseudo politicians did.
" Gender equality " may finally reach our own land. It's about time that Cambodia catching up with the rest of the high tech. countries or the West! I'm very please to hear the good news!
