Two women, who were savagely beaten by a mob of hundreds in Phnom Penh on Thursday for allegedly defrauding villagers, claimed Sunday they had been tortured and held hostage in their own home for three days beforehand.
Yi Socheat, 32, and her sister Yi Channy, 27, also said in interviews at Calmette Hospital that they were wrongfully accused of cheating the Kien Klaing villagers in a Tong Tin saving and loan scheme that their mother ran.
Yi Socheat, who suffered a fractured skull during her ordeal in Russei Keo district, said the pair were held in their home from Tuesday onwards. She said villagers rotated their guard of the two sisters over the three days.
Yi Socheat said she was hit in the head with a hammer during her detention, while Yi Channy said her captors at one point took her outside and throttled her while holding her head in sewage water.
The mob was close to setting the two sisters on fire with gasoline when they were handed over to police Thursday evening, Yi Socheat said.
"They planned to pour gasoline on our bodies and burn us to death," Yi Socheat said.
The angry residents of Kien Klaing village claimed Thursday that 1,656 of them were collectively tricked out of $610,000 by three ethnic Vietnamese women who had set up an informal saving and loan scheme known as Tong Tin.
Yi Channy, who works as a karaoke hostess, said five men Thursday worked the crowd into a frenzy by falsely claiming that she and her sister were Vietnamese.
Chey Soseila, Russei Keo district police chief, said no one has filed a complaint against the two women following the mob violence.
"It’s very strange. Although our local police went to [Kien Klaing] village to set up a table for complaints, no one has come," he said.
Chey Soseila added that no arrests will be made on either side until the two women are fully recovered. No one will be arrested over the mob violence unless the two women file complaints, he said.
"The two women, if they are innocent, we will find justice for them," he said.

This is exactly what happen in a society where the law is not respected. Mob rules occur when people do not trust the law to protect their rights. Cambodia is still way, way behind in terms of the rule of law and order.
