Former King Norodom Sihanouk says he hopes to return to Cambodia to celebrate the New Year with his people.
In a letter in Khmer from Beijing, the 84-year-old monarch says Chinese doctors will examine him in February and if the prognosis is positive, he will return home to celebrate the Khmer New Year in Cambodia with ‘’the people.’’
Officials preparing for local elections slated for early April, on Thursday welcomed the news, claiming that Sihanouk’s presence in Cambodia at election time was good for democracy.
Hang Puthea, director of the Neutral and Impartial Committee for Free Elections in Cambodia (NICFEC), said he thought that he noticed that the presence of the former King during election time tended to reduce voting and counting irregularities.
Tep Nitha, secretary-general of the government’s National Election Committee, also noted the political situation in Cambodia generally seemed to be ‘’less tense’’ when Sihanouk was present.

I think he should be very shamefull to live on other people tax monies. Cambodian people have ignored him completey already. He came and he has died has no different/
Ooh King father, what can we said? You know regime can only last to some degree but Khmer people and culture will live forever. So, put your bet on ordinary Khmer King father, Lately you only concern about the Upper Class. I know for sure many common Khmer people still love you and pray for you,King Father. They have faith in you King Father.

Stay in China, Sihanouk. You do not need to come to Cambodia anymore. Your home is China or North Korea, the communist block. You are a coward and always praise the CPP ignoring the life of your poor Khmer and you dont' want to say anything about the border because Ah! Sen has already shut your mouth. You are not the man of your word!
