Search continues for American MIAs in Cambodia

Phnom Penh - The Cambodia and US governments are continuing to cooperate to locate the remains of 54 US personnel who remain missing in action (MIA) since the Indochina wars, a visiting US official said Tuesday.
Former US ambassador to Cambodia Charles Ray told a gathering of communications students in the capital that he had returned to the country on an official visit to coordinate continued cooperation to locate American MIAs, all of whom disappeared during American missions in Cambodia between 1970 to 1975.
It was Ray's first visit since his appointment as US deputy assistant secretary of defense for prisoners of war (POW) and missing personnel affairs and director of the Defense POW and Missing Personnel Office last September.
'In Cambodia, the cooperation and support on this matter has been very, very positive,' Ray said, adding that he was scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Hun Sen later in the week. 'There is no concern about future relations in this area or about Cambodian cooperation.'
The US has already accounted for 29 of a total of 83 MIAs in Cambodia, he said, but was determined to continue its efforts for as long as necessary.
Ray also took the opportunity to praise Cambodia's efforts to combat terrorism at home and in the region and said although US-Cambodian relations were not yet perfect, they were 'growing well.'
'Cambodia has played an unheralded but important role in the war against terrorism,' Ray said. 'Every effort must be made to ensure Cambodia succeeds and does not become a haven for terrorism, weapons and terrorism financing.'
He said the US had not forgotten that Cambodia was the first nation to completely destroy its entire stock of portable surface-to air-missiles, and applauded continuing Cambodian government efforts to tighten border controls.
Ray served 20 years in the US army before moving to the diplomatic corps and taking up his tenure as US ambassador to Cambodia.
