VOA's Suon Kanika interviews a local farmer in Kampong Thom, January 28, 2007In recent years, land disputes between the rich and the poor people of Cambodia are alarmingly high, and it continues to be a prevalent problem in the country. A new case of land disputes, involved a group of farmers, whose land is allegedly taken by Try Pheap, is causing quite a stir in Kampong Thom province. VOA’s Suon Kanika has the report.
A group of more than 200 people gathered in front of Khlaing pagoda temple last Sunday, in an attempt to get back their land, in which they claimed to have occupied since 1993.

A representative for the local farmers tells VOA Khmer that Try-Pheap, a private industry informed the families that the land will be used for rubber plantation. The families are only left with a front lot of 300 meters each, said Meouv.
About 40 families out of 186 families in Khlaing village (Sandan district) sold their land to the company under the wrong assumptions. “Try-Pheap told the farmers that they should accept the money, because the land will be taken from them regardless”, added Meouv.
SRP Sok Pheng, who was on location, has promised to bring their petitions to appropriate authorities to seek for justice.
