Mass Developments Fuel Land Disputes in Cambodia

A recent Human Rights Watch’s report (2006) indicates that land grabbing and land disputes have been on the rise, and these cases have become more violent in Cambodia.

As such, the Cambodia Center for Human Rights (CCHR), who has received loads of complaints from people across the provinces, wants the government to take immediate measures to curb these problems.

In his letter to Prime Minister Hun Sen, CCHR's director Kem Sokha says that the government should take immediate actions to enforce anti-grabbing laws, which hopes to respect the rights of the economically disadvantaged people of Cambodia.

He says that private companies are increasingly violating laws that govern the Cambodian government's concession land decrees. “The law states that investment companies are only to have 10,000 hectares of economic concession land”, said Kem Sokha.

In practice, many of these companies are allowed to own more land then the law intended them to have, and as government spokesman Khieu Kanharith explains it, “economic developments are inevitable, because its purpose is to bring income back to the people.”

Yeap, that is what I have been
said all along since day1. We all
want jobs and high income. And we
can't do it without using more and
more land.

Way to go, Khieu Kanharith, tell
them the truth.

Econonic development done correctly benefit everyone; but abusing poor Cambodians of what little land they have only make their economic situation worst. Capitalism greatest asset is the rule of law that everyone follows; but Kieu Kanharith openly admitted that this government "allowed to own more land then the law intended". Cambodia is a mafia state ruled by the law of the jungle. In the long run, economic development will suffer--just look at Sicily and the Phillippines.

Yeah right, you Viet-dog troller @10:24AM. Obviously, agent ORANGE, and the tremor from the B Nam Hai (52) bombings ate up your brain cells and made your brain go wacko barking like a crazy dog. Plus, your excessive drunkenness of your own stinky Nuoc Mam (fish sauce) day in and day out for 25 years to make you less fearful of death to fight against the Americans made you Viets are what you are now: suicidal.

If you don't believe me, just ask the Americans. Fair enough?
