On Thursday, several union and opposition party officials gave speeches to almost 500 garment workers to encourage them in their demands. “You work between 8 to 10 hours each day to the service of our national economy, and that of your family,” Mu Sochua, SRP Secretary-General, declared. “But, your demands are going nowhere because of bad application of the labor law.”
Rong Chhun, President of the Federation of Unions of Cambodia, denounced the indifference of the government to the wellbeing of workers who are “mistreated by their bosses.” He also stressed that if the situation was able to be improved, it was because of the involvement of Sam Rainsy and Chea Vichea in the workers’ movement, in particular Chea Vichea “who sacrificed his life to obtain the salary increase.” “Thanks to him, the minimum salary climbed from $26 to $45, and recently to $50,” Rong Chhun observed. During this period of election campaign, Rong Chhun assured that, according to him, “a government led by the SRP could bring the salary up to $80.” A statement which was later reinforced by Sam Rainsy who took the podium, he mentioned a salary of up to $90 per month, if the fight against “the corruption of factory owners and government officials” is maintained. This type of corruption was also recently denounced by the International Labor Organization (ILO).
Next, Sam Rainsy exhorted the workers by saying: “Don’t be scared! Organize unions!” He also assured the workers that in fact, it was the factory owners who are scared of a strong and untied labor movement.
