We won't allow Cambodia genocide tribunal to collapse: Judge

Khmer Rouge tribunal judges are meeting this week in an attempt to iron out procedural differences in Cambodia's genocide trials, in what some officials see as the last chance to bring former regime leaders to justice.

Co-investigating judge Marcel Lemonde, who is representing the international jurists in the meeting, is refusing to rule out the possibility that the 14 foreign judges may collectively resign from the tribunal.

But Australian Justice Rowan Downing, one of the tribunal's UN-appointed judges, has told Radio Australia that the judges are not ready to walk away.

"The importance of these trials, I don't think can be underestimated for the people of Cambodia," he told Claudette Werden on the Connect Asia program.

"I can assure you the international judges will do everything possible to save the situation if it gets to a point where it looks as though it would otherwise collapse."

"By the same token there are some matters concerning international practice and human rights where we cannot and will not compromise."

One of the key divisions among judges has been the role of international defence counsel, with Cambodia's Bar Association - concerned that their cases may be commandeered - seeking a $US2,000 registration fee to be imposed on all international lawyers.

>dead in the ending year 1997 >after physically and morally >violence by Hun Sen."

Are you saying Hun Sen's violent behavior caused his mother to die or Hun Sen directly killed his own mother?

When Cambodians see that only a few old men they never heard of during the time they suffered under the Khmer Rouge are the only ones who are going to be prosecuted, while the killers they saw everyday and continue to see living free will die free men and women, then the awful truth of how they have been manipulated by this farce will descend upon the country. So congratulations Mr. Downing!
