April 04, 2007

The Cambodian Human Rights and Development Association (ADHOC) launched a project in Phnom Penh on Wednesday to contribute to the work of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC), which is expected to try former Democratic Kampuchea (DK) leaders.

The European Commission (EC) funded project will bring the reality of the ECCC down to the people at the grassroots level, so that they will be properly informed and enabled to participate in the process to make it a success, Winston Colgan, charge de' affaires of the EC Delegation to Cambodia, said at the launching ceremony for the project.

The project will provide community education, and support and counseling for victims and witnesses, he said, adding that legal advisory services and psychological assistance will also be provided.

The project is being implemented by the ADHOC together with the European NGO, Oxfam Novid, Winston Colgan said.

The ECCC was jointly designed by Cambodia and the United Nations to try former DK leaders believed to be responsible for the death of some 1.7 million people between 1975 and 1979.
