Cambodian parties on Monday declared further results of the commune councils election, while local media reported that the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) has scored a landslide victory.
According to preliminary results, 98.3 percent of commune chief positions were taken by the CPP, which held 98.6 percent of commune chief positions in the first commune councils election in 2002, Information Minister and government spokesman Khieu Kanharith was quoted by the Cambodia Daily newspaper on Monday as saying.
"Absolutely the CPP is winning the election," he said unofficially. Sam Rainsy, president of SRP, told reporters at his office that his party won about 3 percent of commune chief positions in 1621 communes across the country.
In Phnom Penh city, the SRP won only three commune chiefs of 76 communes and it lost three seats for commune chiefs comparing to the commune councils election in 2002, Sam Rainsy said.
"From now on, we will have only two main political parties, Sam Rainsy Party and CPP," he said.
Muth Chantha, spokesman of the NRP, told Xinhua that they won several deputy commune chiefs even the party has just been created and Prince Norodom Ranariddh did not stay in Cambodia.
"We have several voters supporting us and it is a good sign for us," he said.
Meanwhile, Mar Sophal, head of the Committee for Free and Fair Election in Cambodia (Comfrel) which is an independent election monitor, said on Monday that according to their reports from 500 communes of all 1621 communes across the country, the preliminary results showed that the CPP won 481 communes, while 17 communes for the Sam Rainsy Party (SRP), one commune for Norodom Ranariddh Party (NRP), and one commune for the Funcinpec Party.
"We have just had the preliminary result where we could contact by phone," he told a press conference at his office in Phnom Penh.
Official results of the polling will be declared by the NEC on April 24.
This is the second ever commune councils election since the Kingdom of Cambodia was established in 1993. It lays the groundwork for the general election in 2008, which will elect the fourth ever government of the country.
