Even thought the trial of the former Khmer Rouge (KR) leaders had encountered some minor obstacles, Joseph Mussomeli, US Ambassador to Cambodia, said that he is confident that the KR Tribunal will move forward.

In a declaration made to the press during his trip to Pursat province to observe the local government reform on 27 April, Ambassador Mussomeli said that the trial of the KR leaders will move forward even if there are some minor obstacles it encountered along the way.

Mussomeli said: “I am confident that the top Cambodian leaders are determined to have the KR trial moving forward. Therefore, external pressures applied on them will not have any influence on the progress.”

Mussomeli added: “As you all know, the whole world is turning their attention on Cambodia to see what it has done in the KR trial issue, and the Cambodian leaders also know that the whole world is turning their attention on this work, therefore, I am confident that the trial of the KR leaders will move forward even if it has encountered some minor obstacles.”

The US ambassador indicated that the aid donor group will work together to push for the progress of the trial of the KR leaders, and also the Cambodian people are awaiting to see the progress in the trial, and they also want to see an independent trial.

Mussomeli said that there is a large number of obstacles. One of the problem stems from the high cost of registration for defense lawyers when compared to other international trials. The other problem stems from a lack of understanding due to cultural differences between Cambodian and International lawyers. He said that: “In my opinion, they should find a resolution and they should bear with it in order to resolve with success this task.”
