Preliminary results from Sunday's local elections in Cambodia indicate that the Cambodian People's Party has won the landslide victory widely forecast by political analysts.

Some 12 political parties fielded more than 100,000 candidates for commune councils -- small administrative bodies that govern rural villages or city neighbourhoods.

Preliminary results indicate that Prime Minister Hun Sen's ruling party won 1592 of Cambodia's communes, while the Sam Rainsy Party won 27, and the remaining two went to the Funcinpec party.

Opposition leader Sam Rainsy told Kyodo News that the preliminary results indicate a ''significant change'' in Cambodia's political geography, saying that his party is the only realistic competition against the CPP.

Analysts warn that the result will likely see Cambodia's ruling party further tighten its grip on power ahead of next year's national polls.

Voters in Sunday's poll, though, told the AFP newsagency they hoped the elections -- only the second local poll to be held in Cambodia after decades of conflict -- would give democracy a better foothold in the country.
