The US Peace Corps swore in 29 volunteers in Phnom Penh Wednesday , marking the first efforts of the volunteer organization in the country. New staff will be seeking how they might help aid development, establishing an office in the capital and setting up programs for volunteers to teach English and provide health education.

US Assistant Secretary of State Eric G. John arrived in Cambodia Wednesday to meet Prime Minister Hun Sen and other civic leaders. Cambodia has enjoyed improved relations with the US in recent months, with the US Congress voting earlier this year to lift a suspension on direct aid to the country.
