Cambodge Soir, the French and Khmer-language newspaper stopped its publication after 12-year of publishing in Cambodia. In a statement issued by the newspaper Editorial, the newspaper will be definitively closed due to bankruptcy. However, Stéphanie Gée, Chief Editor of Cambodge Soir, told The Cambodia Daily that the newspaper was shut down because of an article it wrote about the Global Witness report was too critical of the government. Following the publication of the article, one of the reporters was fired, and the newspaper employees started a strike on Monday to protest the firing of one of their colleagues. Nevertheless, the newspaper management announced on Tuesday that it has decided to closed down the newspaper.

-------
KI-Media note: The Cambodia Daily quoted Philippe Monin, director of Société des Editions du Mekong, the owner of Cambodge Soir, who said of the striking reporters and editors: “They don’t have the same way of perceiving the development of the country.” According to Reporters Without Borders, Philippe Monin is also employed by the French Development Agency (AFD) to act as an adviser for the Cambodian agriculture ministry, of which Chan Sarun is the minister. Chan Sarun is directly named by Global Witness report for involvement in illegal logging.

Je supporte le communiqué des
salariés du Cambodge Soir.
En plus je pense qu'il ne faut pas
par le motif politique que le
directeur Cambodge Soir a licencié
son salarié. Global Witness a édité
son rapport sur la corruption de la
famille et les relatives de Mr Hun
Sen, premier ministre. Ce rapport a
été propagé non seulement au
Cambodge mais dans le monde entier.
A quoi bon de le cacher, si
Cambodge Soir est un journal servi
aux peuples khmers?
ou bien Cambodge Soir existe pour
servir les corrupteurs du Cambodge
ou pour servir les communist youns?

Ou bien vous fermez Cambodge Soir
pour arrêter de propager la culture
français dans les pays francophones ?
Très de regrets si, Monsieur le
directeur, vous décidez de fermer
définitivement le journal
franco-khmers Cambodge Soir qui a
été existé depuis 13ans. Et c'est
depuis 13 ans que j'ai appris la
langue française via Cambodge Soir.

Disgusting. They should keep that paper shut down until the reporter is re-hired. Is this a country with freedom of press or is every paper supposed to be a platform for a PM who is border line nutcase?

Soir" decide to close its
Franco-Khmer newspaper

Le Cambodge est un lieu multilingue-culturel
dynamique (Anglo, Franco, Sino) en
développement en Asie grâce aux
peuples khmers et particulièrement
aux touristes étrangers.

Si le directeur du journal Cambodge-soir
décide de fermer son seul journal
franco-khmer au Cambodge, ce sera
trop de HONTE pour la France.

Yes, English rules! French is going down!

In Asia only the old and the dying can speak French. The younger generations are now either learning English or Chinese where they see more employment opportunities.
