Cambodia Concerns About Fish Production Over Low Water Level of Mekong River

PHNOM PENH, June 23 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian officials are worried about the fish production this year because of the low water level of Mekong River, a senior fishery official said Saturday.

The low water level could cause difficulties for fish to lay their eggs in lakes and branches of the Mekong River, Nao Thouk, head of fisheries department of the Cambodian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, told Xinhua.

Nao Thouk said that if the water level of Mekong River still does not rise in the next few weeks, the fish production this year will decline.

Last year, Cambodia had about 442,000 tons of fish production across the country and it provided over 200 million U.S. dollars national revenue as well as about 2 million U.S. dollars tax from fish lot, Nao Thouk said.

The revenue did not include the income from fish exportation to China, Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, the U.S. and Australia, he added.

The corrupt attribution of fishing lot is a huge problem on the Tonle Sap. Large amounts of fish are taken from the lake in a non-sustainable way, leaving local fishermen without income, and generating vast amounts of money for the elite.

More problematic for the future is the construction of dams in China, which will reduce the flow of the Mekong river in such way that low levels will happen every year, causing the problems described in this article again and again...
