Folklife Festival Opens On The Mall [USA]

6/27/2007

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Virginia Governor Tim Kaine joined ambassadors from China, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Northern Ireland to open this year's Smithsonian Folklife Festival.

The "Roots of Virginia Culture" is one of the three themes of the ten-day festival. It coincides with the 400th anniversary of the settlement at Jamestown.

Kaine says an explosion of culture is part of Virginia's story because of the English settlement at Jamestown. The festival also includes Native American and black history that helped shape Virginia.

More than 700 performers and artists will help make this one of the largest Folklife Festivals. The event spans seven city blocks on the National Mall. It usually draws over one million visitors.

This year's festival also celebrates the cultures of Asia's Mekong River region and Northern Ireland.
