The National Assembly (NA) debate on the new criminal code legislation was halted for one day on Wednesday because several CPP MPs were accompanying Heng Samrin to the airport for his departure on a 3-day visit to the Philippines. Today, the NA will resume its debate on the criminal code. The one day NA halt due to CPP MPs accompanying their leaders taking off at the airport was criticized by the opposition party which said that it was a waste of time. SRP MP Son Chhay told The Cambodia Daily that the order for the NA to temporarily stop its legislation debate is undemocratic, and it caused a waste of very precious time. Son Chhay compared the order to those issued in communist countries. However, Nguon Nhel, CPP 1st vice-president of the NA, said that in general, MPs must see the NA president take off (at the airport) “because he is the respected top leader who is going abroad.”
