PHNOM PENH, Cambodia: The Cambodian government has stepped up a campaign to discredit allegations that powerful businessmen and government leaders close to the prime minister were involved in masssive illegal logging.
"The so-called report on illegal logging in Cambodia is totally groundless, unacceptable (and) rubbish," the Cambodian Embassy in Britain said in a statement.
The embassy statement, dated Monday, was given to The Associated Press by the London-based environmental watchdog group Global Witness, which recently issued a report making the allegations on logging.
Contrary to the allegations, "the policy of reforestation has been introduced and implemented while the ban on logging and deforestation has been well conducted and observed under the leadership of Prime Minister Hun Sen," the embassy statement said.
Global Witness, in its report released last week, accused relatives of the prime minister, tycoons closely linked to him and some senior government and military officials of enriching themselves by stripping the country's forests.
It came out ahead of a June 19-20 meeting of international aid donors to pledge new assistance for Cambodia.
The report also blamed donors for not pressuring the government over the alleged plunder.
After the report was issued, the Cambodian government ordered a stop to its circulation in the country, but opposition lawmakers pointed out that anyone could download it from the Internet.
On Wednesday, the group condemned as senseless the Cambodian government's ban on the report, saying the move cannot hide the illegal destruction of Cambodia's forests.
The embassy's statement said Cambodia terminated Global Witness's role as an official forestry monitor in the country in 2005 after it began a "political campaign" against the government.
