“From this time on, we will end all official and unofficial negotiations with the Funcinpec,” so said Muth Chantha, NRP spokesman. Muth Chantha announced the ending of all negotiations with Funcinpec on 13 July 2007. However, Funcinpec spokesman said that Funcinpec now can see who is the obstacle (to the negotiations).
Muth Chantha said: “We ask to end (the negotiations) here. NRP leadership and Prince Ranariddh have closed all doors to negotiations. This is the end of it.”
Muth Chantha raised three issues which forced NRP to end all types of negotiations about Prince Ranariddh. The three causes came from the fact that Funcinpec leaders do not respect a single standing, and the lack of faithfulness of Funcinpec towards two points raised by Prince Ranariddh.
Muth Chantha added that Funcinpec took the opportunity during the negotiations to pull away NRP officials to join Funcinpec by telling these officials that whoever joins (Funcinpec) first, will receive fortune first. This is a psychological warfare. He also added that Funcinpec does not have a common goal. “We did not see any sign of respect shown. Therefore, we cannot accept an unclear situation, and allow the Funcinpec to make any gain (from this situation).”
Muth Chantha declared the end of all negotiations following the interview given by Keo Puth Rasmey, Funcinpec president, to a foreign radio station [RFA], where he said that Prince Ranariddh can return back to Funcinpec as the party historical president.
Nov Sovathero, the state secretary of the ministry of information and Funcinpec spokesman, reacted to this news by saying that if Muth Chantha indeed said this, he surely received the order from Prince Ranariddh, “therefore, we can see who is the obstacle to unification of royalists. And if it is indeed this way, Prince Thomico’s words are very correct when he said that Prince Ranariddh is the obstacle (to the unification of the royalists).”
Nov Sovathero added: “Funcinpec will not die if it does not have Prince Ranariddh. We can function efficiently with a president and a permanent committee.” He also said: “We set aside the negotiations because they are useless.” He blamed the stalling of the negotiations on Prince Ranariddh who only raised the Funcinpec problems to resolve but he never listened to Funcinpec.
The ending of the negotiations took place only two days after Pok Than met to discuss with Kol Pheng, the Funcinpec ministers of youth, education and sports. The discussions between the two took place after they received the green light from Prince Ranariddh. However, Nov Sovathero said that the discussions at this level will be useless. He believes that Prince Ranariddh and Keo Puth Rasmei must hold the discussions before a decision can be made.
Now that the negotiations have ended, the fate of the return of Prince Ranariddh back to Cambodia is left in the dark as long as the prince does not accept to return back through Funcinpec.
