Phnom Penh - Cambodia's most unsuccessful assassin was behind bars again after a second string of failed attempts as a hit man for hire, police said Wednesday. Siv Eang, aka Sam, 39, who gave his occupation as "killer", was remanded into custody pending trial after being detained Monday by military police in the north-western province of Banteay Meanchey, the province's military police chief, Roth Sreang, said by telephone.
He was arrested after a car bombing nine days earlier had wounded a man involved in a land dispute and the man's rival confessed under police questioning to hiring Sam for 3,500 dollars to murder him, Sreang said.
Sam's arrest led to his confession for two other failed bombings with similar modus operandi, said Sreang, who alleged Sam specialized in setting off homemade hand grenades via remote control.
It was not Sam's first stint behind bars for near-misses. He was convicted in 2000 of attempting to blow up a man's ex-wife in Phnom Penh as well as a failed attempt to kill her former husband three years previously and served three years in jail.
"He claims he can't remember how many people he has actually killed, but luckily, he seems to miss a lot," Sreang said.
In light of his previous record, Sam faces 10 to 20 years in jail for attempted murder if convicted this time.

Kind of light for a man who will try to kill again. We have too many poor and hungry people to worry about. Just lock him up for life already.
