Hun Sen pays lip service at Human Rights meeting: Respect free speech ... but you are not allowed to demonstrate

Cambodia Hosts Human Rights Meeting

Vong Dara, VOA Khmer
Original report from Phnom Penh
27 September 2007

Prime Minister Hun Sen urged Cambodians to respect free speech, as a workshop on human rights got underway in Siem Reap Thursday.

The Asia-Europe meeting is the eighth unofficial workshop to be held on human rights. Thursday's focus was freedom of speech.

By following international conventions on human rights, the government was focusing on the promotion of rights for its people, Hun Sen said.

Asean too was working toward the creation of a human rights body, he said.

Ou Vireak, director of the Cambodia Center for Human Rights, said groups were skeptical of Cambodia's commitment to human rights.

Cambodians still suffer discrimination and other rights abuses, he said.

The international communities shouldn't entertain Hun Sen anymore. He is a skill full liar. What he has said will not be like what he is doing. He is a complete opportunist person to stay in power for monies.

4.13 Hun Sen is helping to develop coutry. don't you see it! Allow human right meeting, security, economic growth, what is the point?

Forget about corruption! Funcipec is so corrupted, esecially Ranarith and he spend all money abroad. so, this money doesnot use in Cambodia. Anyone who come to power is very corrupted. What can we do? Kaos! coup! war! bloody! no please.

Will SRP party not corrupt? Will SRP can deal with border issue? This is a NO NO. They will join CPP soon, I can bet.

We need to pick up what is best to improve our country which has been torn by war of FOREIGN influence(Frence, America, China, Thai and VN) .

4:35 AM is a real CPP.
The one like Say Hak, who burn 100 houses and build one house on the same land. And everybody applaud.
I am not so sure of your declaration 4:35 AM. I am totally disagree with your point of view about the corruption in the FUNCINPEC. If some of the top management are corrupted, it's doesn't mean that FUNCINPEC is so corrupted. A lots of high class members are so poor, because that they really believe that they can help people to build cambodian's society. So they are not like Ranariddh, a lots of money. When you're corrupted, you get some fruits of your collaboration of your corruption. Beside most of bad actions came from the CPP members. so 4:35 AM you're completely wrong!

Gentleman

Human rights is more than just allow to watch and speak about. The rights to exercise all senses that we as a human posesses to achieve any objective PARTICIPATIONS. Government sectors must work together with any association's issues,as prescribed in national constitution.

It does not matter wether CPP or SRP or HRP leads the goverment, what remind us that CAMBODIA IS NOT PARTY'S BELONGING.

After all, there are so many Phd,doctors... who can deal with matters progressively and objectively, but not by IGNORING or OPPRESSION.

IT IS BEST IF OUR KING FULLIFLS HIS ROLES in Articles 8 and 9 of constitution.

Don't listen to what he says. Watch what he does. Don't be fooled by Mr. Hun Sen false love of free speech and democracy. Just look at his records and the national election is coming next year and how many more opposition activists will be put down to their graves, then we can know how serious Hun Sen is to free speech and democracy in Cambodia.

Hey stupids, we don't give a damn about free speech or what have you. Right now we fucking jobs, jobs, jobs. Once we get jobs, then we can think about other things -- whatever you want. Man, there are millions who lost their proud and pride, and we have seen several articles where people committing suicide due to lack of job. How can anyone not concern about this issue? That is purely cold blooded ignorant.

On the other hand, I have not seen a single person committing suicide due to lack of free speech or what have you. Do you know what I mean? if so, let's get our priority strait out here.

Who wanted to deal with Cambodia if Hun Sen and former king still there?
The western country they are ruffle their feathers when they heard those name, because the sign of contagious disease they afraid to of helping and hiring the workers from there if we want more job for Cambodia destroy CPP,because that party sign, smell and reputation are rotten ,stink, disgust and bad luck
that is Cambodian obstacle, you wait and see if this party loosing it power there a lot change and progress this is my prediction other thing the third world know and they do not want to get dirty with Hun Sen because he is a former khmer rouge and he still a communist man,so the help most just from youn communist and block communist but the father of communist is broke who gonna like to help us? help us=doing business=providing job
If we scare of change of the party ,we do not need to scare the social impact,or the social cricises.

According to Radio Free Asia recorded the voice of Mr. Hun Sen on 9/27/07, saying that he supports free speech, human rights and domocracy in Cambodia, sounds more like he's trying to protects Vietnamese citizens instead of trying to protect Cambodia's border.

Hey guys, didn't you watch one of the recent video clip about KRT here recently. In the discussion, one of the guess stated that in the beginning or after the fall of KR, people didn't even care about seeking justice, all they care about is food.
Similarly, at this stage, people want jobs, jobs, jobs. Nothing else is really matter. Try to understand this. Don't worry too much about democracy. Hell, many many khmers don't even know what it is, no matter how many times you teach them on an empty stomach or when their mind is pre-occupied with finding work (or job) to support their family.

Actually about 3 millions, but you are not that far off to argue about. No one ever count all of them. Moreover, keep in mind that this number composed of both Yuons and Ah Khmer-Yuouns. If you live in the west for too long, most of them look like Yuons to you, but not to me.

The question is not whether or not Hun Sen is developing the country. The question you should ask is how efficient is he running the country. With billions of dollars Cambodia borrowed from IMF, ADB or world bank, even a monkey sitting in Hun Sen position would also develop the country. However, one can gauge the performence of the leader by look at the unemployment rate, literacy rate, import/ export, espcialy corruption and the rule of law. Based on my observation unemployment rate is very high which cause ten of thousands Khmer to seek low paying jobs in neighboring countries. Literacy rate is very low even compared to neighboring Laos. Cambodia have trading deficit in billions of dollars with Viet and Thai. There is no rule of law in Cambodia. The prerequisite for democracy to balance the power but in Cambodia power is in the hand of one man. The coruption is so rampant to the point that people considered as a norm. Almost all the richest people in the country are either themselves have power or have a connection to someone in power. According to all the factors above Hun Sen should be removed from power as soon as possible in order for Cambodia to catch up and be be prosperous like the rest of the world.
