A ferryboat carrying about 100 passengers from Kampong Cham-Kroch Chhmar, exploded and caught fire while traveling near Thmey village, Rumchek commune, Kampong Siem district, Kampong Cham province, at around 10:30 AM of 06 October 2007. Local newspapers reported that the Veasna Mean Leap (Good Luck Fortune) aka Po Thai ferryboat was transporting passengers from Kampong Cham along the Mekong River when it caught fire about 20-meter from shore. Fortunately, the boat did not sink, and the captain turned the boat to shore to look for urgent help. However, 4 passengers were injured from the fire on the boat. When the boat reached the shore, villagers used a water pump to put down the fire. The owner of the boat said that the fire came from a short circuit in the engine. Merchandises on the boat were completely damaged by the fire, they amounted to about $10,000.
