International Group Urges Parties to Align

A delegation of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, an international group of lawmakers, said in Cambodia Wednesday the opposition Sam Rainsy and Human Rights parties should join together in an effort to defeat the Cambodian People's Party in next year's elections.

The two parties have so far failed to join in a so-called "alliance of democrats," citing leadership differences, as the country heads toward national parliamentary elections in July.

IPU delegation leader Ann Clwyd, a parliamentarian from the UK, met with Human Rights Party President Kem Sokha Wednesday.

Following the meeting, Clwyd said she would like to see cooperation between the parties, Kem Sokha said.

"I support her idea, wanting the democrats to unite to win the 2008 election," he said, reiterating that he would like to see an alliance, or coalition, rotate its presidency every two years.

"The Sam Rainsy Party has appealed to all democracy lovers, justice lovers, and all the royalists to unite with the [party]," SRP Secretary-General Eng Chhay Eang said Wednesday. "SRP is not limited, but other politicians form a political party according their views and will. This is their political right within the law."

I wish to see the democrats join together as one, or as coalition, or league, to win over CPP, just like in the old days along the Khmer-Siam borders (Freedom fighters, royalists and communist KR joint forces).

Yes, but not only that, when your democracy is fake, you can fitted or mixed with another fake democracy to form at true democracy. This is a bit like trying to make pineapple juice from and orange and a banana. Do you know what I mean?

under the current election formula of dividing seats, neither SRP nor HRP win the majority...they really need to merge otherwise all their efforts will become useless or forced to work under the control of the cpp...

I really would like to see both parties become one as suggested. It's might be true, especially for Kem Sokha's case, that both of them seem to compete for being the Prisident of to-be party. Sen Soube and a few other senior folks in the HRP can help Sam Rainsy Party. Moreover, Sokha's popularity while he was in the HR organization can also help. If a few deals can be solved, that new party would be a lot powerful than SRP alone. It seems like we really need someone who is well respected by both men to be a negotiator to get them together.

The new party might be good too with new name. I don't like much using the name of a person to be the party's.

Mr Ok Socheat was the first who had this proposal!
Why not joint every party and give a chance to Mr Ok Socheat to be the secretary general of this coalition. He's a hard worker and a visioneer... And He is graduated MBA. He speak 3 languages fluently. And He doesn't want anything more than the khmer's freedom and pride.
I don't think, it's will happen.
Cambodian leaders are so selfish.

I don't think the coalition between the HRP and SRP will see the day soon. Well I wish that I am wrong.
I am just related one fact to you. After the putsch of Funcinpec, 18th of october 2006, the brother of Khem Sokha was back with Funcinpec. I don't see any good reason for this.
Now I guess the brother of Mr Khem Sokha is with the HRP.
If democratic parties join, please don't bring some lazy royal relatives and You Hockry with them.

Hmm ... I don't see anyone is optimistic about the stupid alliance idea at all. This is just one of the many stupid Sam Rainsy's ideas that bite the dust as usual, hahaha, LOL, hahaha...
