The mystique of Angkor Wat, the quaint colonial-meets-newly cosmopolitan glamour of Phnom Penh, the bright lights of Paris — all contained in a dress. Or a whole shop full of dresses, to be precise.

Ambre, the boutique of Cambodian fashion designer Romyda Keth, will open its flagship store this week in the Philippines, finally bringing to Manila a dose of that sought-after Khmer flavor.

Keth, who was schooled in fashion design in Paris, applies her signature fusion sensibility to her latest collection, inspired by her most recent travels and the French chic she sees on the streets of the city she calls her second home. “These dresses have been influenced by my latest trips to Japan and India — Japan for the Sanguine and Obi dresses; India for the Bijoux, Ginger and Bea dresses; and completely Parisian dresses,” Keth explains.

Photographed in Angkor Wat and various exotic locales around Cambodia, Keth’s collection has once again been executed in jersey and cotton, the flowing, breathable fabrics she prefers because of the comfort and freedom of movement they give her clients. The most show-stopping dresses, however, are of Khmer silk, artisanally hand-loomed in Cambodia’s weaving villages and embroidered to the hilt. Always sensitive to the female form and the needs of her customers, which include Cambodia’s who’s who and French celebrities, Keth’s party dresses are also perfect for Manila’s social set thanks to their myriad styles (with new styles coming in every month), full range of colors, and reasonable prices (Keth’s designs are sewn at her own atelier-cum-factory). Ambre, which was brought to Manila by owners Michael and Janet Adams, even offers Keth’s bridal collection and a same-day altering service.

Ambre boutique, located at G/F Vernida I Condominium, 120 Amorsolo Street, Legaspi Village, Makati City, with telephone numbers 892-1575 and 893-1554, will hold its soft opening at 7 p.m. on October 12.
