Cambodia to launch campaign to stop violence against women

Four victims of violence again women (Clockwise from top left): Piseth Pilika, Tat Marina, Pov Panhapich and Touch Sunnich

PHNOM PENH, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- The Cambodian Committee for Women (Cambow) will launch a 16-day campaign against gender-based violence to raise awareness of the issue and change the Cambodian 'mindset' on violence and abuse against women, local media said on Wednesday.

As part of the campaign, Cambow, an alliance of 34 non-governmental organizations which focus on women's causes, will organize TV and radio spots highlighting true stories of violence and discrimination Cambodian women have endured, reported Cambodian-language newspaper the Sralanh Khmer.

The women's rights group will also publish and distribute books and audio CDs relating accounts of violence and how Cambodian laws discriminate against females.

It will release a report named Violence on Women: How Do Cambodian Laws Discriminate against Women on November 25, which will focus on how Cambodian laws related to domestic violence, rape, trafficking, and marriage contradict the U.N. Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW).

"Thousands of Cambodian women suffer from violence every day. After studying in detail the laws which are meant to protect women, Cambow found that some of the articles of these laws directly and indirectly discriminate against women, which leads to further abuses," said Kek Galabru, chairwoman of Cambow.

"Now it is time for the government to reform the laws so that our obligations comply with the CEDAW, which Cambodia ratified in 1992," said Kek Galabru.

According to a Cambow briefing released on November 19, thousands of abused women are seeking assistance from the committee.

Many countries around the world hold the campaign annually from Nov. 25, the International Day against Violence against Women, to December 10, the International Human Rights Day.

Very glad to see woman now is speaking up against any form of abuse.Cambodian culture is holding a family value by perserverance of woman, mainly for safety and security of family environment.

Be aware of that seaching for individual rights is not always the key to fullfil family committment . In western world, individual is more emphasised which in fact has led to high marriage breakup. Subsequently family stability and environment to grow does not exist for which traumatise the children as result of that.

Awareness and understanding is the key for mutual desireable outcome. Social education and social development continuously required for this changing world, where physical attraction is more desired than emotional/psychological binding.

Western ideology blossoms in many ways for better physical being, but weakened in emotional binding in man and woman of family orientation.

Cultural change take places along with economic change.

Yeah, but my arse is not changing, and when it does, then we'll go along with you, alright, 1:20?

Cambov should write a letter to the prosecutor of the Municipal Court of Phom Penh and another one to the Prosecutor-General of the Court of appeal to request them to investigate or get the police to investigate the murder or attempted murder of Piseth Pilika, Tat Marina, Pov Panhapich and Touch Sunnich.

No gain, no lost here, dr. Lao.

Mr. 2:49PM

No gain, no loss, when our Piseth Pilika has her life, and the other have lost their physical ability and their careers, and our nation has lost their talents?

It's a pity!

They were enriching the lives of their fellow Cambodians when Piseth Pilika was alive and when Tat Marina, Pov Panhapich and Touch Sunnich had their full physical ablity and beauty.

What talent, dr. Lao? Can you give me a couple samples (mp3) of their best work from each of the artist that you're referring to.

Frankly, they don't look like artist to me, dr. Lao, but I could be wrong because I am not perfect by any mean. Thus, I will reserved my judgment until after hearing what you so called talent, Fair?

Also, if anyone can help dr. lao find some MP3 made by the artists indicated above by Dr. Lao, I greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Oh come on, guys, if the nation had lost that much talents, there ought to be a couple fans in here that can turned me on to a few of their tunes. Isn't that so?

Sorry, Dr. Lao, anymore argument?

Messrs. 5:08PM and 8:13PM

Pity the nation whose citizens do not appreciate the talents it has produced!

No doubt some of the priceless works of its forefathers have been stolen and sold abroad!

No doubt such artist entertainers such Messrs. Koy and Krem are called "ah koy, ah krem"! So far during my lifetime, no fanous artist has ever be awarded the ttile of Okha or equivalent. In England famous artists , inckluding singers, have been awarded the titles "Sir" or "Dame".

No doubt there is no statues of famous artists, writers or poets for their fellow Cambodians to appreciate, admire and even worship. I've seen a statue of Kram Ngoy (one of our famous poets)hidden away in a corner within the premise of the office the district of Ang Snuol. Who can have a look at his statue?

The Tum Teav song CD does not have the name of the songs' writer nor the name of the author, Venerable Som, of the classic novel Tum Teav.

In bookshops around Phnom Penh, Khmer language books are displayed at the back of those shops, while foreign (English) language books are displayed at the front.

We are supposed to be Buddhist, yet in public places we have statues of Visnu or Preah Naray, Hindu gods instead of Buddha.

Dr. Lao, we (khmers) don't value our artists the same way as European do. Only the best of the best will make it in this industry. People like Sin Sisamouth and Sorey Sothear have left us tons of their works to remember them by, but for Piseth Pilika, Tat Marina, Pov Panhapich and Touch Sunnich, I don't know what they have left us to remenber them by. I really don't know what talent they had contributed to our nation except helping to promote westerner fashion as depicted in some of the picture that I've seen.

In the 60's, we saw Prince Sihanouk invited famous actors like: Kong Sam Eun, Chea Utthon, Som Van Sudani, Dy Savet, Sak Si Sboung and some of other famous actreses & actors to his entertaining spots and just to celebrate and to promote their talents. Of course, it was never without our famous singer Sin Sisamout, Keo Montha? and Moa Sareth. This gave fine opportunity for our latents people to shine. Today, he has less energy and surely these young actors are not his generation anymore. He probably just didn't want to be bother with it. His children just don't seem have the same passion. So there is not much of a recognition to those entertainers. At least there is no powerful government figure or Entertainment Company to really do anything.

Can there be a true establishment for Khmers' Arts in our Nation? May be and may be not. Until then, we decide to take notice for our new talents actors and actresses. Thank you Dr. Loa for bringing it up & God bless!

Sincerely,

Ordinary Khmers.

Sorry, but I can't agreed with you, 3:58. The reason Somdach Euv didn't promoted any artists today is because they are not artists, period. Somdach Euv is an artist himself; he'll look bad if he promote junks. I am sure Somdach Euv is dying to discover to talent as much a I do. Frankly, I listen to more Thai/Lao music and Khmer oldies than I do Khmer contemporary.

The problem is people are not focus on the main objective. They want to help the country, but they only think about power. They want to be a singer, but they only think about their appearance. They want to be and engineer, but they only think about money. It's sick, man! How are we going to get any place is beyond my comprehension.

Tep Rindaro, Umpor Devi, Utthara, Lakenna, Sophal, Rottha , Siela and many others will be very dissapointed in you 4:34 am and so does their fans. These are Khmers new and fabulous Stars. They may be born from a broken society or after the Khmer Rouge Era, but their looks and talents keep our eyes glued to them. They are undeniable and unforgettable Khmer's young. You can disagree, but we 're not going to let them down. They are our truley Khmers new Artists and we adore them.

OK

Okay then, 7:59, can you recommend to me a couple of their best tunes or tunes that you like? I like to hear it.

Nice, but we don't have welfare checks for people to have so much fun.

However, if you need companies in Long Beach, CA, feel free to sponsor as many you needed from here.

Can 1:05p.m a murderer ? take a guess.

To 10:30 a.m, seems like you missing out a lot. Those names are not the singers, but actors. Khmer's new actors. Why don't you do your own home work? It might be more intersting than hearing it from somebody else. Life surely can use some entertainments. Well some folks don't.

They must have lost all pleasures in life or o.k go back to your commy's life. Your boss certainly prefere the other way. Go and follow them or your head will be choped off.

Nasty 1:05 p.m! Soon or later he will run his car off from high cliff on his own! Gee Ha!!!! Die man!

those who do not supportted the victims but by bashing them and holding grudge on them and acting like the knew the victims very well in real life, hopefully the same fate will fall upon one of their family members. Then when they started to realize that no one had any right to kill or to use acid on anyone else. If you dare to committed crimes then you must face the law. Unfortunately.....Cambodia...help me fill in the blank.
