A senior Norodom Ranariddh Party's (NRP) official claimed this Saturday that more than 100 Funcinpec and Sam Rainsy Party's (SRP) supporters in Banteay Meanchey Province defected to the Norodom Ranariddh Party (NRP).
According to NRP sources there were 136 SRP and 10 Funcinpec's activists had voluntarily defected to the NRP in a welcome ceremony on Saturday in Chang-ha commune, O'chrov district, Banteay Meanchey province.
Mr Noranariddh Anandayat, special advisor to Prince Ranariddh, told Radio Free Asia on Saturday that: "Prince Ranariddh's appeal for a united force between royalists and all democrats started to have positive effects".
Mr. Moeun Sarath, Chairman of Executive Committee of the NRP in Banteay Meanchey, who has presided over the welcoming ceremony said that:"They have come in drove. Both the SRP and Funcinpec had come at the leadership level".
Mr. Bin Meuk representing the defectors from the SRP from Chrey village, Chang-ha commune, O'chrov district, Banteay Meanchey, who was one of the 136 defectors said that: "I have defected to the NRP because the SRP has not achieved anything for the people".
As for Mr. Tek Ngis representing the 10 defectors from the Funcinpec Party said that: "I am too poor so I have decided to defect and people have helped me".
Reacting to these defections, spokesman for the Funcinpec Party, Nov Sovathero, said that on the contrary the ex-Funcinpec members who have stopped supporting Prince Ranariddh and who have defected to the Funcinpec Party were far greater in numbers than these defections.
Nov Sovatharo said that:" The re-defections to Funcinpec were far greater in numbers which is hard to quantify in figures".
Eng Chhay Eang, Secretary General of the SRP, has also reacted that he is not surprised at all because he knows that these defections were due to false promises. Eng Chhay Eang said that: "I am not paying any attention to this and I don't give any credits to these defections. We just look at the results of the commune election early this year".
Kul Panha, Chairman of an election monitoring body called COMFREL, has said that all Khmer politicians have always used a political ploy to attract more supports for their party before the upcoming 2008 election.
In recent weeks, Prince Ranariddh has called for all royalists and democrats, including the SRP, Human Right Party of Mr. Kem Sokha and the NRP to form a united force, but his wish is yet to materialise.

I hope Eng Chhay Eang is not so ignorant like that in every province. I mean that is if he don't want the SRP to disappear from this planet. He should try to find out what those people are upset about and try to make some adjustment for them. 136 members is not so small number as 6 or 12 to be wasted.
The cause of defection are: Sam Raingsy autocratic reign and Eng Chhay Eang hypocrisiy.
Do you think all these defectors are realy SRP members? In Cambodia, an individual has many different political party cards, so it is difficult to insure that what exact party he or she belongs to. Before 1993 election, the CPP claimed that it had 4 million supporters. But the result of the ellection was different, that mean the CPP lost.
I live in Cambodia for almost of my life and I know that the staged defection ceremony usually held by political parties to cheat the voters. You just listen to the claim by on defector and then you will realize that this is the fake defecteion. Mr. Bin Meuk who laimed that he is SRP from Chrey village, Chang-ha commune said he have defected to the NRP because the SRP has not achieved anything for the people. I just would like to ask the question " Has NRP achieved anything for the people?"
One more thing to be noticed is that Mr. Tek Ngis who claimed that he is from the Funcinpec Party said that: "I am too poor so I have decided to defect and people have helped me". This is obvious that he was given money or rice that is why he defected to the NRP.
I agree with Mr. Eng Chhay Eang on the fact that the election result is more important than the make up election.
Let's wait and see the result of 2008 election.
Don't worry 8:01!
If prince Ranariddh is good and is loved by the Cambodian people, his fate is not like now. Prince Ranariddh used to be a big mountain and now he has becone just a grain os sand. If he is competent he must prove to increase Funcinpect seats in National Assembly. And you see, now prince Ranariddh lost everything. So only studpid will join the lost and incompetent.
Exactly stupid stupid does,says all.
A Democrat is not a Sihanoukist.
Partisanship and nationalism is a trwo different thing.
But personality cult and demagogue are the same.See example Sihanouk vs.Sihanouk,Sihanouk vs.Khmer Republic then Khmer Rouge;thern Sihanoukists vs FUNC<=>FUNK,Rainsy=Sihanoukist and Rannridh=Sihanoukist not democrat...Rannridh=Rainsy all are Sihanoukists,CPP is Sihanoukist then SRP=NRP=CPP since all are Sihanoukists.
See now don't wait
Well, everyone is Sihanoukist is because no one in Cambodia likes Sarimatakist. Is that a crime, 9:31.
Yes, you are correct about the SRP being a hypocrite, 8:01. Here, the SRP going around promising everyone that they will not leave anyone behind if they were elected to run cambodia, but fact of the matter is, they left hundreds of their own members behind, and that is why they defected.
Furthermore, instead of spending so much time complaining about a few errors in the voting registrations, they should used that time to help their own people to cope with difficulty or hardship in order to keep them from defected to other parties. Am I on the right track?
Could someone explain the word:"Defect" and why?
example: Like a guy name Keo Ramy
He started to sneak into FUNCINPEC through his Father inlaw when FUNCINPEC was in total Chaos in 1997-98, then he defected to SRP then he defected again to join a New HRP with Kim Sokha, and Kim Sokha made him Vice President of the party. Do you think this guy will defect again? If so, what's his next move? can anyone tell? or not?
1:29, here what my tiny dictionary said about the verb "defect."
"Desert (a cause, a country or an army), often in order to join the opposing cause, country, or army"
1057am,
You asked, being Sihanoukist not Sirimatakian,is it a crime?Absolutely not a crime but crimes!
What's the point to oppose then, since Sihanouk is in CPP now?
I am lost, 4:38. Are you say the Khmer people should not hate Sarimatakist? I don't follow you. I thought people have freedom of choices.
