(BangkokPost.com) – The governor of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), Kraisri Karnasutra, has warned of a possible shortage of natural gas to produce electricity within the next three to four years.
The EGAT chief admitted to concerns that the construction of a nuclear power plant in Thailand could spark future protests but insisted that the move was necessary.
“We only have so much natural gas to produce electricity,” he warned. “We have noticed that supplies have dwindled and natural gas supplies could run out within 3 or 4 years.”
“I guarantee that modern day technology will create a perfectly safe environment to accommodate the use of nuclear power in our country as it has already done so in other countries.”
Thailand is one of 77 countries exploring nuclear energy as an alternative source of energy.
According to the Director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Mohamed ElBaradei, there are currently 439 nuclear power reactors in 30 countries, which supply 15 per cent of the world's electricity.

Wath out guys!!!
This is thai's first step,to build nuclear power plant, progressively nuclear nuke is second proving to be a big boy in town in Asia.
India and other has done that, so can thailand.
KS
Dude we need to protect our natural resource so that poor people can survive if they can't get a job.
Let the international experts studying this case.
It is not a problem to use candle light.
You must not take a fast decision.
That's show that siame,is moving up to the next level,I don't see anyproblem with that.on the other hand we needed to wake up!and make contact to the west' more, if we wanted to improve our living life better.this is what AMERICA-is trying to fight for freedom for, to build a better world.
Yeah!dude,we had been using the candle light for so long, that's why we are so behine the future.beside technology suppose to help the poor people living life better.oh!one Q?did you use candle light where you are living right now?
Yeah!Dude,so we don't have to sent our people to ah! siame,or ah youn,to search for a better life.
Massive Hydroelectric Dam: Let Thais' plan go through, the Southern Vietnam will go dry. Let me tell you from the Ecosystem point of view, when the Mekong water decrease--the Sea water will rush in the Mekong delta. The Vietnamese who depended on the fishery and water for rice fields. Ah Youns will die and go starving, and will to Cambodia begging for Foods.
Khmers can give ah Youn a hammer on the heads! LET THAIS' HYDROELECTRIC DAM GOES PLEASE. Cambodia will not be effective as much. Khmer watch out Youns will eat your dogs!
What will Thais build next? Is it possible for them to build a Nuclear Power Plant? Remember Chernobyl in the Ukraine?
This would be great for Thais Society in technological advancement in the modern society! If the Nuclear Power Plant plan is safe for the neighbors, then I would support this ambition. What do you do with the waste Uranium rods, will Cambodia become the Nuclear dumpster? Will Thailand respect Khmer boader integrity when the Nuclear Reactor (NR) is operational? What if you have another Chernobyl?
These are some of my concerns.
I am 100% for nuke power plant. It is very economical and pratical for poor society. The waste can be confined safely underground shield by lead to limit radiation of radioactive element to a safe level. If they can used radioactive element safely in hospital, they can use ii safely in power generating application as well.
Therefore, the quicker they can get this done, the quicker we can improved our standard of living.
I saw a film about the Mekong river: The place was very wonderful , the people were very happy and it was a pleasure to see children smiling.
I think this project is not good for Khmer people .
The fish will die due to the pollution and the people will have nothing to eat.
At the end , as usual, they will have to face the invasion of their neigbours.
5:41AM, you're on the right track. And I am not a Physicist, but a nurse by profession. You need to remember every elements that we know today has a different wavelenghts, therefore, Lead (Pb) cannot be an answer to everry radioactive isotopes. X-ray & Radium, yes!
Like the USA, where all or most wasted Uranium rods being stored under the mountain in Nevada. That is more than 1 mile underground. I don't think the Thais has the resources.
And 5:58AM; yes! You are right. If the Thais were to build NPP, what location? You need to pump water from lake, pond, or river to cool down the Reactor. If they build by the edge of Mekong River, it might be a problem. It can have some ecological changes. We have to wait and see.
WIND TURBINES (WIND POWER) IS THE SAFEST FOR THIS AREAS.
Yes, we'll use everything whenever and wherever possible, but from what I understand, wind power can't produce the demanded power to meet today need; otherwise, it will put hydroelectric, oil or coal burning, and nuke out of business.
6:33, there are plenty of mountain in Northern Thailand. Also FYI, Laos is 90% mountain, and Vietnam is about 65% mountain. Thus, if we have to use one of those mountains for nuclear waste, I don't think it is a big problem.
Fucken dam SOB! These days all the fucken the Thaicong and the Vietcong can anything as they please to destroy Cambodia but Cambodia can't do shit! AH HUN SEN needs to step down from power now!
Nope, we want our beloved PM Hun Sen to lead Cambodia. Nothing has been destroyed. Stop dreaming, will ya (12:40)?
Be very careful with the NPP.
Nowadays, France encounter many serious problems such as pollutions, ecological Pb, environmental Pb ,etc..
You must not call a beginner for NPP.
Thai govt wants to go nuke? sure why not put that plant in downtown Bangkok. you wouldn't like that would you, especially with a restive muslim population that will not be cowed by your past repressive policies..
