Phnom Penh - Octogenarian former Khmer Rouge deputy prime minister Ieng Sary has selected a highly experienced American lawyer as his foreign defence attorney, the court set up to try former leaders of the movement said in a press release Tuesday. Michael Karnavas, a member of the Alaska Bar, is Ieng Sary's choice to work with his Cambodian co-lawyer, Ang Udom, to represent him before the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC), the court said in a statement.
Karnavas is president of the Association of Defence Counsel of the International Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia and has spent the past seven years defending clients in that court, it said.
"Mr Karnavas has practiced as a defence lawyer since 1986. He has also taught trial advocacy skills for the past 18 years and lectured widely on international criminal law around the world," the ECCC said in a statement.
"In 1995 and 1996 he worked in Cambodia with (local legal aid organization) Cambodian Defender Project and the Cambodian Court Training Project," it added.
"Mr Karnavas' application for registration with the Bar Association of the Kingdom of Cambodia is currently being considered by the Bar Council, and so he will act as Legal Consultant in the case until the process is concluded," the statement said.
Ieng Sary was pardoned of genocide in 1996 by former king Norodom Sihanouk in exchange for defecting to the government and breaking the back of the movement, but was subsequently charged with war crimes and crimes against humanity by the ECCC - charges he denies.
Up to 2 million Cambodians died under the 1975-79 Khmer Rouge regime.

Khmer-Rouge hates the US-Imperialist ....but at the end , an Imperialist lawyer is asked to save his criminal-arse .
Even the lawyer from the Haven won't be able to help him and his wife! They are cold-blooded beasts. They should be tried in the jungle court of law.
This serves as notice to those who hate America and the West that when when people are not in trouble they hate America; on the contrary they ask America for help when they are in trouble. Look at Ieng Sary right now and prince Rannaridth during Hun Sen coup in 1997 as an example.
He looks so depressed. Not that i have any sympathy for this killer.
I don't think the KR hate America. Like Sihanouk, the KR and other communists have to take side, the anti American side, to gather and rally support from the mostly the poor, unhappy and the ignorants, because the rich, educated people do not support them.
Our leaders including Sihanouk, Pol Pot, and the rest of the gangsters walk in the wrong path. Until now Sihanouk still doesn't see black and white. He still see China as his protector, but to serve his own interest. If these people side with American, our country won't be this bad. Our border will be protected, but arrogant Sihanouk always scolds the imperial US left and right. He has retard metality and can't think straight. He thinks straight only his movie, Kareoke and mistresses.
America is the country based on democracy principle. If any country goes to the far left, America will step in to change the regime such as Yugoslavia, Panama, Iraq, Afganistan, etc...
What does the Chinese do to Cambodia????? Nothing.
The communist China tries to influence Khmer/Chinese to open chinese school. As you can see, these students are flocking to learn Chinese because their parents think China will be the super power in the world. But, they don't know around the world employs English as the official language.
Make one wonder though. Doesn't Hun Sen and his compadres ever look at these old bastards and think :as I am so they once were, and as they are, so shall I be, ? Once THEY had the power exclusively and thinking they would make to to their graves without ever having to answer to what they did. But here they are in the spotlight for the sewer-scum of former humanity that they are. Bye-bye villa and comforts.
