Original report from Phnom Penh
02 January 2008
Cambodian and Vietnamese officials met Saturday in Svay Rieng province to discuss the prevention of cross-border crimes and immigration, officials said Wednesday.
Svay Rieng Governor Cheang Om told VOA Khmer that he met with the governors of Tay Ninh and Long An provinces in an annual meeting to review the cooperation between the two countries in 2007 and to plan strategies for 2008.
"We meet every six months to a year to discuss border security issues, particularly on drug trafficking, human trafficking and other cross-border crimes," he said. "We also discuss illegal immigration."
Cheang Om said cooperation between the authorities of both countries had led to a decrease in crime.
"Because of this cooperation, people living along the border of both countries can go on with their lives without any fear or insecurity about their safety," he said.
Svay Rieng officials who attended the annual meeting said the three governors were able to discuss many issues on cooperation and implementation of strategies.

The cross-border crime prevention discussion between Cambodia and Vietnam is a joke! No matter what, Khmers will always be harassed, injured, bullied, and sometimes murdered by Vietnamese farmers, fishermen and military police with the Viets always having the upper hand in everything.
I'll start to believe something has been done once Cambodian military police and border officials start standing up for their Khmer citizens and take action to such violence and crime initiated by the Viets! But they dont!!!
Discussion about illegal immigration??? That is a joke too. Vietnamese have been illegally settling into Cambodia since 1979 and nothing is going to stop that either. Currently there are an estimated 2-3 million Viets in Cambodia right now!
It is not a meeting. It is a report that Slaves have tell the masters. It is required that the slaves report to the master to ensure the action is still under the master directions. There is not discussion.
Sen did nothing but just bend over for the Viet to..
It is more than a joke
Sihanouk broke it, Sihanouk must fix it!
Get Sihanouk to back out of the not-so-secret deal he made with Hun Sen.
Get Sihanouk to denounce the Viet's vision of annexation of Cambodia.
Get Sihanouk back to be the father of the Nation by befriending with the West and the outside world, now that Vietnam has been re-united/unified.
Get Sihanouk back to be what he once was but with less or none of the Vietnamese and/or the Chinese.
After all, Sihanouk had been flipfopping all his life politically and after all, what is that humongous Embassy near Watt Phnom built for?
That's, in my honest opinion, how we can solve our beloved motherland's problem otherwise Khmer will never ever rid of the Viet's new and systematic yoke of colonialism.
No one political party will never ever be able to save Cambodia without Sihanouk whether it be united or otherwise!!!

7:14 AM,
I have to disagree. I don't know about having Sihanouk placed in the political brokering or decision making spotlight. I think most people are sick of him and the only ones that do worship him are mainly peasants, the Royalists, and those who have nostalgia for the Sangkum Reastr Niyum era.
He had his chance back in the 1960's and afterwards due to his flipflopping, inconsistent maneuvering, and personal vengeance, Cambodia eventually drowned itself into a quicksand that it STILL cannot get out of to this day.
Plus, he doesn't have any real power anymore. All he does is bicker about people who criticize him and write memos. Honestly, he's done enough for Cambodia and he should just concentrate on his rapidly deteriorating old age.
This occasions is just another act of Hun Sen taking the role of a vassal and paying tribute to his Viet masters...if he doesn't his head would be used as table legs to hold the master's teapot.
Mr./Ms 8:04AM,
You seemed to have agreed that Sihanouk broke it at least.
Two questions we all are asking:
What is the political grand scheme anybody has for Cambodia to survive on her own at this stage?
What is the chance of any political party besides that of Hun sen/Viet's, united or otherwise, to win the 2008 election?
Please, be honest to ourselves.
Given the right political climate, and a second chance before his death, I think Sihanouk will accept and be able to fix it.
Again, Sihanouk broke it, Sihanouk must fix it!

"...Given the right political climate, and a second chance before his death, I think Sihanouk will accept and be able to fix it...."
The key word there is "political climate". Only IF. And that "if" is quite a long shot. I don't mean to sound pessimistic but there really is no political grand scheme to get Cambodia to survive on its own...and no body can come up with one. And if they do, they have no power to implement such ideas and tactics. Cambodia will continue to be a corrupt, hopeless, and begging country for the next 25 years if everything stays as it is like right now.
I know that Sihanouk had dug a hole for all of us Cambodians and practically everyone that came afterwards dug us even deeper. Honestly, Sihanouk can't help us get out of it and everyone has to be realistic about it. Seriously, what can he do???? Nothing.
Mr./Ms. 10:29AM,
Here we go again, agreeing that Sihanouk broke it.
All blamings asides, and I too sometime see that in Phnom Penh, one is at one's wits'end politically.
Iffy or pessimistic it may sound, we must not give up. We must continue to talk, to venture, and to explore until we come up with a workable solution for our homeland's problems.
Do you in turn 10:11AM, have anything at all as an approach at a very high level to solving our homeland's problems?
