The court hall of the Khmer Rouge tribunal are being renovated and expanded, according to Khmer Rouge tribunal spokesman Reach Sambath.

The hearing hall between the administration office and provisional detention facility is being repaired after having been used for a while. Reach Sambath said that the stage of the court hall is being decorated and expanded forward since it is too small. “Safety glass will be fitted in front of the 500 seats for the protection of co-judges, co-prosecutors, lawyers and especially the accused,” claimed Reach Sambath.

“The reason for widening platform is that the previous one was too small. It has been noticed that the previous stage could not house all the co-judges, co-prosecutors, clerks, lawyers, the accused, and guards as well as other assistants for the upcoming hearing,” said Reach Sambath, adding that the renovation had been started on December 20, 2007 and was scheduled to completely finish in February 2008.

Although there has been no trial held in the court hall yet, the hall used to welcome journalists, diplomats, witnesses and victims to observe Duch’s appeal hearings against his provisional detention through a wide screen broadcasted live from the Pre-Trial Chamber court room.

Reach Sambath said that the court hall has so far welcomed approximately 15,000 people. “The 500 seats for audience will be kept the same. We only widen the stage and install the safety glass,” said Reach Sambath, adding that the appeal hearing of Nuon Chea might be held in that main court hall since the security has been well organized.
