The NRP leader is turning to the Supreme Court, the last legal institution able to annul the sentences handed down to him. The political future of the prince and his participation in the July general election will depend on the Supreme Court verdict.
Norodom Ranariddh waited for the very last moment to pursue a new legal avenue. It was on Thursday 17 January, i.e. 5 days prior to the final date, that the prince brought his case to the Supreme Court. He hopes that this jurisdiction will cancel his sentence to 18-month in jail, and $150,000 in fine handed down to him by the Phnom Penh municipal court in 2006. These sentences were also upheld by the Appeal Court in 2007 as well.
The judges found him guilty of breach of trust in the affair opposing him to Nhiek Bun Chhay, Funcinpec secretary-general. Nhiek Bun Chhay accused the prince of selling his former party headquarters to his benefit.
In the legal procedure, the prince’s request to annul the sentences must be sent to the Appeal Court first, which then forward it to the Supreme Court. From there, the Supreme Court has up to six months to decide, starting from the date the complaint is handed over to the court. Nevertheless, the NRP hopes a court decision will be made before April, the date when the official candidacy for the general election must be turned over.
Muth Chantha, NRP spokesman, sees in this affair, a desire to “prevent the prince from pursuing his political career.” Feeling that this accusation was aimed at the CPP, Cheam Yeap, a CPP MP, reacted by saying: “Our party never get involved in this case.” Nowadays, Norodom Ranariddh lives in exile in Malaysia, while waiting for a hypothetical return to the forefront of the Cambodian political scene.

I am a monarchist. I deeply respect our King.
But I don't like some princes who think without them we cannot run the Country...
The more they keep low profile, the more I respect them.
The 3 princes I dislike are: Ranaridh, Chakrapong and Thomoico.
What about Sinahouk, 9:39AM? That devil made a secret deal with Hun Sen by handing Cambodia/Khmer on the silver plate over to YUON to make up the Federation of Indochina. Don't you know that? Do you know what it means? Khmer will be Vietnamized from head to toes. Do you think we (Khmer) are lucky 9:39AM?
Go to hell all of you, worthless kings!
10:16AM
You are right on my friend. Funcinpec is going down hill and Rannarith is crying foul outside the country. He was just too stupid to never see a day like that coming to him. Got blind-sided with cash and women.
Ranarith, if he were a woman, he was probably the southeast asian whore!
They are the bottom-feeders!
HEY, STUPID!
NOW IT IS THE TIME TO ABOLISH THE MONARCHY.
CAMBDODIA IS NO LONGER NEEDED THE MONARCHY.
I agreed Cambodia do not need monarchy. They can be a symbol of the past - keep the royal palace though.
These kings are useless for all Cambodian people. They don't see the agony of our people in Kampuchea Krom who yuon Hanoi exterminates them every day.
Khmer Krom is Khmer Krom left it alone. But for the King named the party under his name, I has no respect at all. Name is important which can cut into the prospect mine of the Voters, e.g. CPP, Cambodian People Party, they mean straight for Cambodian People. So what is heck is Sam Rainsy, and Naranarith Parties, I think Khmer people from French are stupid....I am not in any parties, buthole.
How many wife and children that king had..., King Sihanouk and King Sisovath..Many is that right. Let me tell you those wife and kids were grown up without father and they were suffering because they were abondoned by the king's father..You think monachy is good by setting that sample..I think Monachy should be abolished from our Khmer society.
