Sam Rainsy: 07 January was the day for the toppling of the KR … but it was also a day of foreign aggression in Cambodia

Translated from Khmer by Socheata

Opposition leader Sam Rainsy, who in the past several years used to strongly oppose the 07 January – a day which saved the lives of Cambodians from the genocidal KR regime – seems to soften his stance, by recognizing that 07 January was indeed a day for the liberation of Cambodia from the mass killing of the Pol Pot black shirts soldies.

Speaking to the Rasmei Kampuchea on 05 January, 2-day prior to the official 29th anniversary of the historical day, Sam Rainsy said: “We welcome 07 January because it put an end to the KR.” Sam Rainsy added that 07 January saw the toppling the Pol Pot regime and the liberation of Cambodian people from the oppression and the mass killing. He considers this fact as a positive side of 07 January. Nevertheless, while recognizing this fact, he still sees 07 January as a day of foreign aggression in Cambodia. He said: “If they came to liberate us, they would go back, and we would be thankful to them. But, they toppled the KR and they ruled over us. This is not good at all.

He explained that 07 January saw Cambodia losing her independence and sovereignty, and was ruled by the Vietnemese army. To the ruling CPP, 07 January is a very important day, because it was able to participate in this event, and thus allowing it to win all numerous elections since 1993.

However, Sam Rainsy said that during the past 29 years, 07 January has lost its meaning when someone wants to use it to proselytize to win votes. He believes that 07 January is not a threat to his party. He explained that during the upcoming 2008 election, the number of Cambodian youths is increasing significantly, and these youths do not know what 07 January was.

Sam Rainsy said that 50% of Cambodians are under 20-year-old, 2/3 of them are less than 30, they do not remember what 07 January was, and they look only into the future. He added that Cambodian youths, just like youths all over the world, are looking far ahead of themselves, and they think about jobs, about salaries, and about justice, etc…

To the CPP officials, they still believe that Cambodians will continue to support their party because nobody can denigrate that 07 January was a day of their second birth.

Vietnamese made fire in Cambodia (ie. helped KR got into power) and after Cambodia has burned badly, they came to stop to collect Khmer's properties and at the same time get some credits from the World.

Remember, this agressive Vietcongs nevers intend to save Khmer, they always want to swallow Khmer.

I am supporter of Mr. Sam and continue to vote for his party. But I respect and admire 01/07/1979
Let me ask him.

Who would be a best country to rescue cambodian from the killing field if VN was not the one? US, we love too,but she was gotten blue eyes and cut and bruises all over and had nightmares after VN war. France, no she was sleeping beauty. Thai our west neighbor, POUM MEIDAI KARTOUN LUE. So in this case, the killing might have been continued.

An argument: VN should allow Cambodia to hold the election after she toppled Khmer Rouge?
VN is a communist. All Eastern bloc allied with Soviet Union back then and with VN didn't do general election.

VN should withdraw and let Khmer decided. 100% Khmer Rouge would return in a week into Phnom Penh. US troops so far have been staying in IRAQ for over four years now.

VN should not put pressure on Khmer leaders to submit to them. Then name which country who win the war and let the leaders of that country to have freedom to do whatever might interfere with the winner's security and interests. Not to mention getting a good junk of land.

THERE IS NO FREE LUNCH IN THE WORLD. YOU HAVE TO PAY WHAT YOU WANT. 45,000 VN soldiers killed and 100,000 wounded for the price of what Cambodia would pay.
PHNOM PENH WOULD BE QUIET AS 01/08/08 if KHMER ROUGE WAS IN CONTROL. and so forth....

in 1970 Yietcong & North Yietnam had brough war & burned our House..our house was fired until 1979. They were jumping back stopped the fire and said to us :" We save you,Khmers, from the fire of killing field ".

How & why do we have to thank our neighbour who had burned our house?
Does January 7th mean to us ,or just a plot of Yuon-Hanoi to control us ?

agreed with most of the above posts. We all need to understand that it is becuase of the Vietcong and uncle Whore (ho)that help feul the creation of the KR. There would never be a KR strong enought to topple the Lon Nol government if the Vietcong units didn't help to cripple Lon Nol army along the way.

Let's the people decide the meaning of this day. To the CPP it means eternal thanks to the Vietnamese, because the Vietnamese put them in power. Despite Cambodia is being influenced politically over its severeignity, territory, and rights to protect its homeland from Vietnamization with the influx of millions Vietnamese people to Cambodia in a bit to dilute its population and influence over the Cambodian political arenas.

I urge all concerned Cambodian citizens to practice caution and vigilant before jumping the boat; because, our country is being taken over slowly - do we want Cambodia to like Khmer Krom; do we want Cambodia to be like Palestine?

Good point he's making..but its was china and them that started it all in the first place. Thanks to Sihanouk who was so egostical. He didn't care about Cambodia, he only cared about his fat belly and that dried sausage hanging between his legs.

Recognizing 7 January day is useless for Cambodian nation. It is a sign of loss, loss, and damning...

- First: Khmers have to understand that KR regime has been passed and it will never be happened again. Khmers should learn the lesson of forgiving to our same Khmer race.

- Second: CPP only who is risking to recognize 7 January day as their second birth or hundred births to their power. But in reality, it is not second birth for Cambodian peoples because "Cambodians surely freed from tiger but totally slip into mouth of wild crocodile".

Great reflection and political rhetoric for Sam Rainsy. I am admiring your leadership flexibility and maturity. You have never given up the principles. Your principle has made you become ethical eternal Khmer leader. Your principles are: no corruption, devotion and sacrifice, courage, and righteousness (rule of law)...etc

SRP has to adopt win-win policy to prepare themselve to lead Cambodia in 2008.

I, myself, will vote for SRP...and I encourage you all to vote for SRP to have a change for Cambodia.

Mr. Sam Rainsey is right. January 07 is not a sacred day for Cambodia. There are plenty of strings attached to it. Like controling us forever.

O.k Vietname stayed for 10 years after 01.07.79 to protect the CPP & CP form KR, but she left, chasing out by the UN. Thing had settled and Cambodia had gained her souvereignity in 1993 with Prince Sihanouk as King again and why Vietname or the CCP want 01.07.79 to be remembered for? What is the meaning of it? for entering Cambodia illegally? or as an invader? or what? Look it is as sad as night. You think that you saved us, but in reality you are not. Why? because, the price that we have to pay is forever and that is too much. Enough is enough.

If 01.07.79 is so important and meaningful then why the UN and everybody else had agreed to get them out of the country??? Shouldn't the price be brought down or be on sales? and it should be paid off by now?

Don't we think that we should choose some other day for us to honor instead? If the CPP want to honor it for the rest of their life and beyond. Let them be, it's their political strenght & strategy. It is so, because it put them in power until today and forever more and it 's benifit mostly the CCP, but other people that don't have anything to do with it or have zero gain from it just vote for Mr. Sam Rainsey or somebody else. Vietname isn't God and certainly not for everyone. Again, she did us a favor one and control us until now, that 's enough and just because CCP stands for Cambodian people party, not all Cambodian are pleased and happy celebrating it. Not because, they are Khmer Rouge or sad for the Khmer Rouge, but because it was wrong for letting VIETNAME BE AS OUR GOD, BECAUSE SHE BROUGHT 01.07.79 TO CAMBODIA.

01.07.79 IS NOW ANNOYING AS HELL!

We need someone news as a leader to truely be on our own.
