Sihanoukville’s Phar Leu market erupted in fire which burnt down 874 stalls among a total number of 1,125. The fire took place during the night of 02 January 2008. Stall vendors accused the local authority of starting up the fire in order to force the vendors to move out of this old market and start their business in a new market which was recently built. However, Say Hak, Sihanoukville governor, said that the city authority does not bear evil thought as to create such disaster for the people. Up until now, no one knows the cause of the fire which also destroyed at least $1 million in merchandise.

This is a depressingly sad day for these local merchants who lost entire of their shops and various personal belongings in the ill-fated conflagration.

It is my sincere hope that the authorities will launch a probe into the origin of the fire, and bring the culprit (s) to justice.

On behalf of our Khmer people, we sorry for your loss. We pray for your swift recuperation.

Khmer forever! Yuon out of Cambodia!

Is this how AH HUN SEN Vietcong slave government creates the supply and demand?

How can dirt poor Cambodian people catch up with the rest of the world if they are constantly forced to start all over again like this?

Can Sihanouk be Khmer's last resort solution to Khmer's problem?

Khmer people, please think:

The Viet uses Sihanouk, the Chinese uses Sihanouk, Hun Sen uses Sihanouk, why can't Khmer make good use of Sihanouk before he dies?

Don't let Sihanouk go to waste Khmer people! Enough said?

Psar Leu market is very dirty . No hygiene , no safery. It's good to burn it down.

But you must also burn down the villas of big corrupt officials in Sihanoukville and in PPenh.

All Cambodian Psar or Markets is a fucken place of health hazard, the disease, and the stench of foul smell...Whoever or whatever has the concept of Psar or market has no concept of proper hygienic, proper plumbing, proper walking space, proper ventilation, and proper fire hazard protection and proper exit in time of danger...

I recommend the burning down of all Cambodian Psar for the health and the safety of dirt poor Cambodian people! Just burn it all down and build everything up to a new safety standard!

easy said than done, is it? you think those poor vendors want to live in those dirty, unhygienic market/s? They had no choice. those authority built the new market and asked for $20 000 each store, many vendors at Sihanok market don't have those kind of money laying around. I know a few of them that lost everything during the fire, some want to commit suicide because they have nothing to start over again. some of you that recommend the burning down of all Cambodian Psar should be ashame of yourself. YOu might live in developed countries, have better life, proper hygienic, proper plumbing, proper walking space, proper ventilation markets but Cambodia still is a poor country with big corrupt government. Those poor Cambodian sellers have little or no choice, if you want to blame someone over all these hygienic things, i suggest you speak to the Prime Minister.....(if you dare)

I am sad for the sellers as many of hem had become good friends from my jaunts to the market to buy goods for my bungalows. I admit they were dirty and it was a death trap waiting to happen and that the new markets are reportably very exensive and beyond the means of many of. the sellers
Something though did need to be done its just a shame that whoever decided to burn down the old market went about it the way they did.Dialogue and some sort of insentive to move would of been a better way to go
