SRP leaders led almost 1,000 youths to pick up trash along the city streets to clean the city of Phnom Penh, and also to push these youths to be involved in social (volunteer) work.
Opposition leader Sam Rainsy, the organizer of the SR Youth Movement to pick up trash in the city of Phnom Penh, declared on 13 January that his party organized these youths to pick up trash so that they uphold the spirit of participation to serve the society for public benefit. He added that all these youths must face all work challenges in the society before that can become leaders.
Sam Rainsy said: “The youths serve the people’s needs when they can do it, this is a participation, a contribution from youths who have the spirit of responsibility, who think about the Nation, about the society which they live in.”
Poch Pak, a youth who participated in the trash pickup, said that he volunteered to pick trash today because he want to prevent the disorderly throw away of trash by people in the past, and this work also pushes the youths to maintain the spirit of serving the society based on one’s ability.
Poch Pak said: “I am calling on all the city youths, as well as all the people in the country to help maintain good hygiene in the city and in rural areas.”
Chiem Yeap, a high ranking CPP official, said that the CPP plans to organize 2,000 youths to pick up trash in Phnom Penh on 13 January also, but that the event was cancelled, and he does not know the reason for this cancellation. He told RFA to go ask officials at the city hall.
Chiem Yeap said: “2,000 (CPP) party youths should participate (in the pickup of trash) this Sunday also, but now, I don’t know what happens. The city hall must be consulted before they issue an authorization.”
On Sunday, RFA tried to call Kep Chuktema, the city governor, as well as a number of other deputy governors, however, none of them accepted the calls.
Koul Panha, director of Comfrel, said, regarding the trash pickup by the youths, that the participation of youths in public services is a good opportunity for the upcoming general election, and these youths should be smart to tell all the party leaders about what they want, and this is also a good opportunity for the party leaders to understand the needs of youths at the moment, so that they can bring them up in the future.
Koul Panha said: “They accept a number of political programs that answer to the needs of the youths.”

Sam Rainsy said that the CPP should explain to the people to understand that 07 January was the day that Cambodia lost her independence and national integrity.

It's very good ideas to form the Youth movement to show the public the responsibility of each individual. Khmer behavior in the public need to be changed. I went to Cambodia one time and in the restaurant you can see all the napkins under the table. They pick their nose, teeth and urinate in public. They should learn after Singapore. They know Singapore prohibits to chew gum and throw trash in public, but they don't use their brain to exercise. Who is to blame? Of course the leaders not behave, then the children are not behaving also.
Congratulation to all SRP Youths. You're the model to the elders and the public.
Fine! fine! a 500 riels as minimun fine for those hawks that keep trashing around in public will get them to act real fast. Try it and we'll see what happen.
Anyway, thanks to those SR's kids for doing good thing and set such a good example, but next time, please tell them to pick it up after themself by getting this trashy-irresponsible behavoir into Law. You can do it! Yes you can!
You know, our country is having The Summer Season almost all year long. Leaves are falling at the same time and everywhere as they are replacing with the new one. This makes it hard for us to recognize which is trash and which is brown leave. Our eyes are somewhat becoming blurry and perhaps, we are totally confusing and not be able to distinguish it. We are becoming a society that accepting trash like everything else that are existing around us. Well, it's not. We need to stop for a movement and think clearly that trash like papers, plastic containers, bottles or any junk that we let them slipping out of our hands are ugly, rotten and has great potential to harm us. Our body may become strong and somewhat immnune to some of the deceases from it, but let's not carry it away. We still have our responsibility to clean up after ourself and maintain cleaner environment in our house our town and our country. We must refuse to let ourself be seeing around those nasty and rotten areas and we must restore our own dignity just like everybody else on this earth! Nobody have to live with trash like animals do and so do we. Let us clean this up and change Cambodia! What are those clay pots for? Please make some of it into a flower's pot instead. Plant flowers along our shops and houses. We don't really use them to cook anymore. Let's do something else beside it. Let us be more creative with what we have and sure enough, let us having fun with it too! Please think differently and think cleaner/better Cambodia!!!
Ordinary Khmers
Let's make those clay pots by thousands and make them a big clay potj, line them with our favorite red roses along the city's streets. Give our farmer a job and freedom to do during the dry season as their hobbies and may be they can make some money from it too.
Looking for the CPP children? Have anyone try the pubs and bars and so on...
clean the streets, clear the sidewalks. establish board of health department to inspect food in restaurants and all. we must have some kind of minimum requirements for code of health and it creates jobs. why are we waiting? things that we can do, let's do it now. we need to catch up with the rest of the world in term of sanitation.
All Cambodian youth must be involved in social works and in the destiny of the Country.
