“The international community, especially the donor countries, must use their aid and political leverage to rein down Hun Sen. If he is allowed a free rein then he will be unstoppable.”The events in the Cambodian political landscape in the last few days don’t look promising for a free and fair election. It is looking even unimaginable for a smooth transition, if the opposition wins. In fact it is looking uglier by the day (read the links below).
First comes the surprised and the CPP-facilitated defection of the publisher of the pro-opposition Sralanh Khmer newspaper, Thach Ket. And starting from the 16th, with the arrests of the Sam Rainsy Party officials, namely Tout Sarorn, Huor Sarath and Men Vannak, which was aided and abetted by the once champion of democracy turned a political monster, Sok Pheng, who now is probably the most hated man in the Sam Rainsy Party, the balance of the political landscape is swiftly tipping.
Here, we see that Prime Minister Hun Sen is preaching one thing and is actually practising another thing. Case in point, the prime minister has appealed to his Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) members not to engage in political violence and intimidation but with his order to Sok Pheng to orchestrate the arrests of the above-mentioned Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) officials, proved that the PM did not mean what he said and is not sincere in his appeals.
While the charges of kidnapping against the above-named SRP officials was not convincing, one must remember that Hun Sen had used these tricks successfully many times before. In the rightful mind of any rational persons, what the officials did was what any reasonable persons would have done- and that is to help a colleague, in this case is Mrs Tim Norn, find a sanctuary from the possible malicious revenge attacks from the CPP for her double-crossing them.
The trouble came for Mrs. Tim Norn when she defected to the CPP along with Sok Pheng. Later she was given $200 by Sok Pheng and his wife to entice more potential defectors from the SRP. She was not successful is doing so and by spending all the $200 given by Sok Pheng’s wife without having successfully done the job, she wanted to return to the SRP and began to fear for reprisal. Fearing for her life that Sok Pheng and his CPP death squad might do to her she asked the three SRP officials mentioned above to help her escape a possible assassination. That was when her ordeal begun and so the arrests of the three officials.
I feel very sad for Sok Pheng, who was once, as I mentioned earlier, a champion of democracy. It is unimaginable that such a fine young politician had turned into a political monster deserving condemnation in the strongest term. He had not only sold himself out to the CPP but he had also sold out his wife to become a CPP monster in which the CPP will use as a political tool to conduct a political witch hunt against his former colleagues from the SRP. This is a really cheap politics by any standard.
Coming back to the accusations against the three SRP officials, it doesn‘t need to take a genius to see that the charges are invented and politically motivated. In a full functional democracy Sok Pheng and Hun Sen will be charged with interfering in the democratic process by forcing someone, in this case Mrs. Tim Norn, to join the CPP against their will.
With the political trends moving toward a tense political atmosphere, the promise that the election will be free and fair is a remote possibility and is looking grim by the day. Hun Sen’s appeals for his supporters not to engage in political intimidation and violence is just a window dressing designed for political and diplomatic consumption to hypnotise the international community. The international community, especially the donor countries, must use their aid and political leverage to rein down Hun Sen. If he is allowed a free rein then he will be unstoppable.

Hun Sen's political competent is to hid behind and be friend in the front. This political behavior has been expired and no one use it anymore.
Hun Sen is good in using the tricks of "carrot and stick", "bamboo cuts bamboo", and "politics of fear".
But fair political game such as public debate, equal access of mass media, independence of national institutions, just court or legal reform etc are not welcomed by Hun Sen and his cronies.

First, the donor nations want to help the people. If they stopped their foreign aid completely the people would suffer from that. So they put up with the system that diverts part of that foreign aid.
Second, the donor nations don't see anybody capable of running the country besides Hun Sen, though he admittedly doesn't do too good a job. But SR would fail completely. He would not have any support in the bureaucracy. He doesn't even know how to run his own party.
Forget about people power. The people are tired of civil war, because that's exactly what would happen if SR would want to instigate demonstrations like this. Definitely, the leaders would be in prison for an attempted overthrow of the government.

I think, therefore I am undeniably believing that the overseas Khmer have manifestly and apparently acknowledged a diminutive imformation about what's logically going on in Srok Khmer like, corruption, landgrabbing, poliSickal killings, losing island and more land to Youn,....... Cambodian peoples are not racist towards any other races especially Vietnam. But repeatedly, the Cambodian violence and social turbulence including atrocity are just the by-products of foreigners who have attempted to control and influence Cambodia.
Currently, Cambodia is not yet a nation-state. The very weak structure of Hun Sen's administration is compared like tribalism or feudalism or merchantilism in the 18th century.
Under Hun Sen's leadership, Cambodia as a nation-state is easily fragile and easily manipulated by evil leaders especially the interference of foreigners.
If you are younger Cambodians, and want to see Cambodia has bright and advanced future, you have to help whatever: change leader, laws reform, or working tirelessly inside Hun Sen's current fragile government to restructure the strong Cambodian nation-state for the future. Those restructuring efforts mainly focus on the strengthening the rule of laws, independence of court, parliament, executive, contribution of fair access to national mass media, alleviate poverty through anti-corruption, cronyism, favoritism, nepotism or patronage etc.
Many other countries have fast developed to other modern style of government system such as neoliberal globalism and egalitarian capitalistic state etc to facilitate well being for their citizens. But Cambodia is still a tribalism leadership led by few so-called elites with the political behavior as a mafia community.

Those who think that we don't need to change our leaders because they are all the same are advocating dictatorship. People know that for 29 years Hun Sen can't improve the life of the ordinary people, the country is in a mess and corruption is rampant, so change is a must. We can't say that all food taste the same before we even taste them. It is the same. We can't say that all leaders are the same before we even give them a chance. If we give someone, like Rainsy, Kem Sokha, Sar Kheng, Chea Sim, Ke Kimyan etc, a chance we will know how they are. If they are no good, we can kick them out in the election. I can explain on behalf on Khmerization if he doesn't mind. All defections were not only facilitated, but were orchestrated, by the CPP and in particular Hun Sen himself. Look at what Hun Sen had done in 1997 with Phun Pheap's defection. And as we see clearly with Sok Pheng, whom Hun Sen used to intimidate Mrs. Tim Norn to defect. When she didn't want to defect they concoted a false story against Tuot Saron, Sarath and Vannak and arrested them and jail them.
Hun Sen had lied to the donor countries many times before. Every time there was a meeting by the donor countries, just on the eve of every meeting he promises many thing but after the meeting is finished everything is back to normal- all his promises have gone down the drain. All the diplomats are smart. They knew very well that Hun Sen had broken many promises. They know that Hun Sen will not be the one who will suffer if they cut aid. It is the poor Khmers who will suffer.
