Cambodians urged to stop eating frogs to save rice crop

Phnom Penh - Cambodia's Agriculture Ministry Thursday urged people to abstain from indulging in the local delicacy of fried frogs because the amphibians eat insect pests, saving the rice crop. The price of rice, the national staple, has almost tripled in recent months as inflation surged to around 10 per cent and the government has introduced subsidies in a move to quell public discontent ahead of national elections in July.

Last year the rice crop suffered badly from a plague of brown hoppers, a type of insect which decimates rice fields.

"Frogs eat insects, so by eating frogs we are helping the insects," secretary of state for the Agriculture Ministry Chan Tong Yves said by telephone.

"The insects come to eat healthy rice because it is delicious. We should stop eating frogs, at least briefly, so the rice can grow."

Frogs are widely eaten in rural Cambodia, stir fried or stuffed with lemongrass and herbs, and usually served with rice.

yes, good observation. frogs and even snakes (both poisonous and non-venomous) eat pests, insects, rodents and other mischievous creatures out there that destroy rice and other useful crops out there. please continue to educate people in cambodia to limit their catch of frogs, snakes and other useful creatures out there in order to keep them to get rid of pests and other disease insects in cambodia. educating the general public is one of the best method to help the environment in cambodia. great job to the ministry of agriculture. god bless cambodia.

it's good that some people in cambodia eat some edible insects like the coco crickets, taranula, grasshopper and some other water bugs, and even rice rats in some area of cambodia. by the way. rats and bad rodents can be fed to the zoo animals as well. animal got to eat too.

well, how about put in mcdonalds and other well known restaurant chain from the west in cambodia. not only this creates jobs for local cambodians, people there don't have to go starving anymore when they can eat at kfc, pizza hut, subway, jack in the box, etc... like in the western world. it would be a great idea to do so for cambodia. this way, perhaps, people would have to eat insects anymore, so animals don't have to compete with human for foods.

it's the timing here that is wrong.....we let the frogs eat the insects first and when the frogs are faten up and breed and the rise crops grow big then we can eat the frogs again.....you see.....i haven't eaten frogs for many years now maybe I try one day......

What an idiot, its not just the frogs, its the environment that is affecting the crops, they need to stop logging and corruption, and there is also an infestation of materialistic creatures called Yuons. These are the problems that need to be fixed in order for us to have the best crop seasons.

hello!! cambodians love frogs' meat. unfortunately, frogs are one of a food source for cambodians for thousands of year already. can't just all of a sudden impose this kind of restriction on people who lived off frog business; it's a good business. it no alternative for the people, can't expect them to stop eating frogs. that is so ridiculous.

To 2:40AM

I am Cambodian and I don't eat frog and what the hell are you talking about? Only dirt poor Cambodian people would eat frog, turtle, water fowl, lizard, snake, tarantula, and cricket, water beetle, rat, bat…and this is the legacy of the Khmer Rouge and AH HUN SEN government! I wouldn't even touch the frog and let alone eating it! Ugh!

Talking about exotic cuisine?
