The armed forces is threatening to demolish a pagoda in Kampot province, if the leaders don’t move it first, a chief monk said Friday.
Division 11 soldiers have said the pagoda, which is home to seven monks and nine nuns, was built illegally in 2007, said Venerable In Sok, head monk at the pagoda.
Soldiers are not allowing villagers to hold ceremonies or pray at the pagoda and have threatened to destroy it if it is not moved, he said.
The pagoda is near a military headquarters and must be moved, said Phy Sokhen, secretary of the intervention forces of Division 11.
Not Norn, the district chief of the local Ministry of Religion office, said the pagoda had a legal permit to from the ministry to be built on the site.
The military was wrong in this matter, he said.
Kampot Governor Thach Khorn said he would conduct an investigation.

got to respect the law, can't just build everywhere illegally without getting permit from the gov't. and don't use this as a political victim because it is not so. gov't is not that cruel that the time of the KR. that was history already. people have to respect the law nowadays as cambodia is modernized in many ways. god bless cambodia.
Hun Xen is a Khmer Rouge; there are no just laws in regime of a savage vulgar man, just as saint Thomas Aquinas said, 'Laws framed by men are either just or unjust.' From what actions taken by Hun Xen's regime, we can easily tell that their laws are unjust.
Licadho is a Cambodian human rights group. I suggest people donate to Licadho if protecting human rights there is important. I think Krousar Thmey, APLE Cambodia, and Mith Samlanh/Friends are also excellent groups to support. People should also consider funding law degrees for college students in Cambodia. If Cambodia is going to move past these human rights abuses they need to have a good legal system.

During the civil war between 1970-75 I have never heard that the soldiers of Lon Nol killed or defeated the monks, opposite I have always heard the Vietcon and Khmer Rouge killed and beaten the monks and also used the pagoda for fighting the Lon Nol`soldiers.

i wouldn't be surprised if these political monks are in disguise as they are probably not real, respectable monks. people don't just beat up a revered monk. watch out for tricks as people in asia in general are full of them, and cambodia is no exceptions.

The athiests don't care much about Buhhdist monks. And don't believe that Hun Xen believe in Buhhdim. He would pray or join in any tradtional ceremony just to fool the of the public. It's just an exterior gesture of a hypocite.

Anonymous 8:05, it shouldn't matter what you wear or who you are; a military duties is to protect the interest of the country, not to abuse ppl. Military personel's responsibility is to dealt with domestict/foreign affairs ONLY. This is duty of a police officers. It's a show of force to remind the ppl that i too control the military.
