Strong exports in garments have continued to support a high economic growth rate, but Cambodia's reliance on garment manufacturing is a "key concern," a UN economic group said Tuesday.
In an annual report on the region, the UN Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific found Cambodia maintained one of the fastest growing economies in the region, but the "narrow export base" from garments made it vulnerable.
Growth in the agricultural sector is necessary for Cambodia to reduce poverty, the group said.
UN resident coordinator Suomi Sakai called the link between agriculture and poverty reduction "fundamental."
The government must find a balance between producers, who want high prices, and consumers, who don't, said Hang Chhuan Narong, secretary-general at the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
The government must also balance high growth rates with high inflation pressure, he said, adding that the government would also continue a "reform program" to increase agricultural productivity.

People don't have enough to eat right now because the goods are too expensive -- 1 can of Rice cost 1,000R or more depending on where one purchases it. I think Khmer people are going toward another era of Starvation period.
The government will be tested in handling this great dilema! It will test the ability of the current gov't to HELP aleviate the Societal problem. Will the remaining CPP's good eye become blind?
Well, so far we don't see anyone drop dead yet. Thus, I say we are on the right track.

The Khmer Rouge's agricultural development policy seems to gain more and more support though their means to realise it is very reprehensible. How amny of the Khmer Rouge's irrigation projects have been rehabilitated so far?

Theoretically speaking, if the governments were working for the people in the last 30 years, we would have a system of water management. Water management is just the tip of the iceberg where the Khmers government FAIL the people. Please think about it, the Water Cycle. If you can dig, you'll find it for irrigation purposes, thus, hopefully increase yield in crops.
The Minister of Agriculture in Cambodia, whoever that might be--ougth to think a little bit for the country. Provide the farm equipment to the "may-khom, or May-phum", instructed him or her to use the Tractors to plow the fields for the villagers. This is too long for discussion in the Agriculture fields.
The Hmong, Phillipinos, and some parts of Africa use a new hybrid Rice crops does not required much water. Just like growing a Tomato plants.
I AM NOT TALKING THE POL POT STYLE IRRIGATION. I LIVE IN THE CORN-BELT STATES, THE FARMERS HERE DRILLS TO ACCESS THE WATER TABLE FROM 61-100 METER TO REACH IT. IF KHMER GOVERNMENT WOULD HAVE ADEQUATE EDUCATION, THEN THEY WOULD KNOW HOW TO GROW CROPS EVEN IN THE DRY SEASONS! THUS, I BELIEVE WE THE PEOPLE OF CAMBODIA CAN PRODUCE CROPS ALL YEAR ROUND.
Not when the population is exploding and you got peanut budget.
