Hun Sen: Sdech Korn or Sdech Kon, A Clownish Theatrical King Who Could Topple the Monarchy One Day

“By constantly comparing himself to Sdech Korn, a usurper who assassinated the king and enthroned himself, Mr. Hun Sen has put all members of the royal family, and especially the monarchy, on notice that he could be that modern day Sdech Korn. And Hun Sen’s bitter rivalry with Prince Ranariddh has made that scenario a real possibility.”
The not so sweet, and sometimes bitter political exchanges, between Prime Minister Hun Sen and Prince Norodom Ranariddh, once political bedfellows, has seen their on-again, off-again political relationships evolved into a royal-bashing. Hun Sen and Ranariddh have, once, enjoyed a short but turbulent political relationship. Their political union, as they were unlikely political bedfellows from the start, has led to a bloody street fighting which led to irreversible political competition until today. And that competition had led to a political and personal rivalry which has become an issue of Mr. Hun Sen versus all members of the royal family and, ultimately, it has pitted Mr. Hun Sen against the monarchy. (Read Hun Sen’s speech attacking the monarchy).

By constantly comparing himself to Sdech Korn, a usurper who assassinated the king and enthroned himself, Mr. Hun Sen has put all members of the royal family, and especially the monarchy, on notice that he could be that modern day Sdech Korn. And Hun Sen’s bitter rivalry with Prince Ranariddh has made that scenario a real possibility.

Up until today, the personal dispute of these two, if anything at all, have become a national distraction that no one wants to see. It has become so bitter that Prime Minister Hun Sen has devoted all his energy, paid time and state resources, the likes of national TV’s and Radio’s, to vehemently and constantly attacking his princely nemesis.

The political and personal bickering between these two clowns, one an autocratic strongman of peasant origin and the other is a princely lame duck politician, has put national reconciliation at risks and created conditions not conducive to the holding of a free and fair election. If he wanted to be hailed as a true winner, Mr Hun Sen must compete with an equal footing. He must allow, not just Prince Ranariddh, but all Khmer citizens, to participate in the election process without prejudices.

The Hun Sen-Ranariddh animosity derived from a trivial personal and political differences between an egotistical person with an arrogant attitude and a bully personality and a princely political leader who need to be led. Their argument is childish and is a non-issue. Their bickering has done nothing to advance anyone’s interests. And therefore, Mr. Hun Sen should stop. Instead, he should devote his full energy, paid time and state resources to solve the problems facing the nation and today’s voters, and that is to curb the high costs of living and the soaring prices of goods and the issue of Cambodia’s territorial integrity.

This bitter war of words, if not restrained, can cause a political instability and lead to an unstable government and, to a certain extent, the throne. And that will be a bad premonition for Cambodia. History has shown that the destabilisation of the government and the throne had led to devastating consequences which brought wars and misery. Cambodia had enough of these and I appeal to both of them, Prime Minister Hun Sen in particular, to stop the bickering.

And for the sake of the nation, the people, peace and political stability, to both of them, I say: Enough is enough. Enough of blood and tears.

that was history. in the olden days, there were people who hated the monarchy, and this happened all over the world too, not just in cambodia. in modern day cambodia or the world for that matter, we called that republican. the traditional cambodia sdech korn or whatever is so limited to cambodia. it's like cambodian thing like thinking inside of the box. in modern day cambodia and the world for that matter, i don't like it is possible for a non-royalty or commoner to declare himself or herself a royal blood without actually being bornt royal blood. in the dark age or stone age maybe, but nowadays i don't think the khmers or the world would recognize such usurper, especially given today's cambodia have laws and orders. that was the thing of the past and has no meaning beside just the terms used for the purpose of speech. having said that, i think all royalty ought to stay fall away from active politics, otherwise agree that they should give up their royal privileges like title etc...

this is called thinking and analyzing. seriously and realistic, look at the world as a big picture and see that it is impossible for someone to just claim a royal title and take power over a country without respect to the law, let alone the entire nation's consents. think people, think and analyze like in college before one open their foul mouth to look bad! thank you.

My beloved Khmers!

As a child I came to realize that more Khmer adults were mentally lacking in imagination and understanding. Nowaday, I became older, I still meet the many foolish grown-up Khmers, not only illiterate, but ashamedly educated one, who are unconscientiously and fully supported Hun SenVarman. If Hun SenVarman can say or do to the Khmers what he repeatedly did in Srok Khmer, then what is law and order? What is humanity?

yes, think by using imagination. it is really ok to use imagination as that can help one to become better. they do it all the time in the western world. that's how people invented things for the world because they used imagination and they have vision. now, that's very important for a leader as well to have vision and imaginationa and global understanding, knowledge, etc...

he's just an idiot being intoxicated with power and cockiness. Such a base despicable fool will only shed tears when confronting a loaded gun pointing at his monkey face with a coffin nearby. "As long as the evil deed done does not bear fruit, the fool thinks it is like honey; but when it ripens, the the fool suffers grief," said the Buddha.

I don't think people are as gullible as you think. No one would actually think as you think when reading Khmerization's article. I believe you have come off getting the wrong message from it.

Khmerization did not say that Hun Sen who is might one day be the modern usurper of the monarchy will proclaim himself king of Cambodia.

In fact he is merely implying that if anyone had the power or daring to abolish the constitutional monarchy (which is a real issue and concern for the royals by the way) it would be Hun Sen.

You should also understand that a constitutional monarchy, Hun Sen will not have any gain from usurper the thrown as become a fame new King, but the gain will be merely symbolic and political as it will change our system to full republic.

No one reading this article or for that matter Khmerization who wrote this article thinks that or the message here is Hun Sen will be the next king.

Sorry if you were the only one who misunderstood that message. I certainly thought the message was clear enough to understand what he imply here.

1.15am: Khmer monarchy, by far, depends on Hun Sen's strength, Mr. Hun depends on Youns, therefore khmer monarchy depends Youns in its correlation effect. And that's a problem for me personally.

I too used to see that manarchy is an institution rather than a political manuever. Since Sihanouk idiotically entered into politics, the khmer monarchy was no longer in high regard once it used to be.

We want to keep monarchy to differentiate ourselves from Youns, yet Sihanouk and his little children are afraid of khmers than youns. So I wish them well.

Chan,

well Chan, I can't argue with your resolutional logic there. If Monarchy depend Hunsen and Hunsen depend on Youn, it truly follows Monarchy implies depedence on Youn.

Thus is the reason that there is a real reason to be concern with Hun Sen abolish the monarchy. What i disagree with the person before me was their belief view that Hun Sen toppling the monarchy and turning Khmer until real republic is ridiculous because this is the modern world and no modern world will accept a new king with that kind of revolution.

My follow up on that is that is an argument against a wrong claim. The claim isn't that Hun Sen will be new king and the world will accept him when he usurp the monarchy. It is that Hun Sen can and from the looks of it would like very much to just eliminate the monarchy system in general. That includes excluding himself an any other people of further claims to the thrown.

I have read the story of Sdech Korn yet. He must have been a good King.
But I've been asking myself a question: If Sdech Korn's rulership was so good, why did he not leave a lasting legacy for his successors to continue to rule Cambodia as well as or better than him and build a well governed, strong and prosperous nationa?
Lessons for Cambodian rulership can be learned from an answer or answers to this question.
Perhaps we should ask the same question regarding Jayavarman VII's and our August Great and Valourous King Sihanouk's rulerships as well.

Can any historian help?

I don't think any historian can help, Dr Lao. They are all corrupted. Thus, you better off just think for yourself.

Mr. 11:22AM,

All historians are corrupt! What a tragedy! How can we take the history they write seriously then?

Dr. Lao,

Sdech Korn has never been a good king. He would be a footnote to history if it wasn't for Hun Sen's claims. Hun Sen drew parrallel between himself and Sdech Korn simply because both of them came from less privileged backgrounds and rose to the most powerful job in the land. The good story about Sdech Korn is his usurpation against the king, killed the king and proclaimed himself king. Hun Sen liked to compare himself to Sdech Korn because he came from a poor background and rose to be PM and one day might topple the monarchy and proclaim Cambodia a republic. It's a good parrallel because both came from poor families, became the most powerful persons and both became ruthless killers. Beside these parrallels, there is nothing that people can admire them.

Indeed it's a tragedy, Dr Lao. We can't take anything the corrupted Khmer historians wrote seriously. That is like taken Hollywood movie seriously. Khmer historians would not dare to make Cambodia looks bad, and you know it, Dr Lao. They whitewashed too many things and created lot of holes in our history to protect Khmer image. Every time I look at at Khmer history, it looks more like swiss cheese if you know what I mean.

I just wondered how the modern day Amey Athong felt about HUN SEN's attitude when he publicly trash royal family. In the old day, royal family was untoucheable ,now they are worthless.Sihanouk should voluntarily abolish the monarchy and khmer people should reestablish the republic once again and have a president like the rest of the world.

Thank you very much for your repective clarifications. They have helped me understand more about Sdech Korn.

Dr. Lao:
If you think that Sihanouk was a good king you should resign your position at the Asian Human Rights Commission.

In modern times monarchies are an anachronism and do not serve any greater good. In some countries they do provide some form of, if precarious, cohesion that otherwise would be lost, e. g. Thailand. But this is certainly not the case in Cambodia in the 21st century. Sihanouk was certainly instrumental in saving peace after the 1993 elections, but that may well be the greatest accomplishment of his entire career. The monarchy in Cambodia has practically outlived its purpose.
