Cambodian farmers to benefit from global food crisis: PM

PHNOM PENH - CAMBODIAN Prime Minister Hun Sen on Wednesday appealed to the country's farmers to start growing rice and other crops, saying most of the population would benefit from the global food crisis.

'The food crisis in the world, instead, offers an opportunity for Cambodian farmers although citizens complain about the soaring price of rice,' Hun Sen said during a ceremony some 50km north of Phnom Penh.

'But in return, some 80 per cent (of the population) who are farmers benefit from this. Now the opportunity for our Cambodian farmers has arrived,' he said.

Mr Sen said rain had fallen over most of the country and appealed to farmers to rush to grow a variety of food crops, including rice.

'Now the rainy season has started,' he said. 'Now the world has a big crisis, so please, our farmers start growing the crops, including rice, corn and beans. All the crops have a market now,' the premier said.

Mr Sen banned rice exports in late March in a bid to halt soaring prices for the staple food.

The price of the most commonly purchased grade of rice has hit US$0.90 (S$1.22) a kilogramme, up from US$0.50 to US$0.60 two months ago, deepening the poverty of the one-third of the population living on less than US$0.50 a day.

Mr Sen said on Wednesday, however, that the government was considering exporting rice to find markets for Cambodian farmers and to 'fulfil our international obligation in helping other countries...to reduce the difficulty in the world'.

'Cambodia is a small country, but it can help hundreds of thousands of families if we can export the rice,' Mr Sen said.

Officials have said that Cambodia has enough rice with more than two million tonnes stockpiled.

Just jump right straight to conclusion without any support of deductive propositions: MIDDLEMEN! And correct me if I'm wrong.

In fact, the rice in Cambodia is expensive than in Germany, France and so on.

i hope cambodia will benefit from it in general not just the middlemen, traders, or what have you. nice to see farmers and growers benefit from such market as well. i think gov't is doing or try to do a lot to help the cambodian people, although not as fast as some people wanted it, but they are doing something about it. and that is a good direction to head to. god bless cambodia.

stop the political gimmicks against the cambodian. please show loves instead of hates. anyway, this is a "global crisis", thus, not just confined to cambodia. please understand that in the global economy, most things are connected, so when something is shortfall somewhere on the planet, do expect other parts of the world to have some kind of effect as well. the key to calming down is to understand the big pictures. thank you.

If Cambodia has enough rice to feed its own people there is no reason that prices should increase. Price controls must be put in place.

get used to changes, the world moves forward constantly, not backward. something is prone to be wrong if the world moves backward, and usually when something moves backward, it never last for long. my own thought. thank you.

ps. don't expect perfection either. like the lord buddha have said: finding perfection is like looking for a needle in a hay stack. in fact, perfection is boring, and diversity is what makes the world so beautiful. thank you.

Food crisis is global issue and it it not just Cambodia.

Farmers are holding the trump card if knowing how to make theirs decision right by firming on selling price of unhusked rice/grains. By doing so the farmers shall understand the fluctuation of unhusked rice/grains and situation surrounding them [demends].

Middlemen have been always looking and focusing on their profit margin, is high in particular on processed rice/hsked rice [ready for consumption].

It is time and incentive for farmers to derive from this crisis.

AH HUN SEN is reminding dirt poor Cambodian population once again to slave the rice field so that his Vietcong middlemen can benefit from rice exportation!

I will tell you that only Cambodian people can turn Cambodia into a great country and for Cambodian leaders such as AH HUN SEN can only talk and more talk and smoke his 555 and drink his fine wine and playing golf...

Life has never been so good for AH HUN SEN and all of you dirt poor Cambodian people must keep on working and still can't even afford the basic needs such housing, schooling, healthcare, clean water, decent roads, decent wage... Sometime I wish they know what they are working for?

For dirt poor Cambodian population, they can't even make out about the future because at the end of hard working day they just collapse and fall asleep like a death log and only the will power that keep them going and going and going...

For me I can see clearly the future will bring for these dirt poor Cambodian people and it is just same old shitty future!

Vote CPP and everyone wins. Vote SRP and everyone will be back to Year-Zero.

6:42 is true, however, every country has working poor. "Working Poor" means working very hard but still poor which sometimes can't even exchange for rice.

In my opinion I could see an improvement so far as 7:14 said however, the progress is very slow in an unacceptable moving.

I didn't see government pay much attention to help farmers at all but just let them struggle by themselves. The improvement that the farmers has today is the result of farmers labor not because of the government's effort.

Wrong 1:20; it is not that the government ignore farmers. It is just that exponential growth always start out very slow, but when it get going, it will go very fast.

Bullshit 2:39PM!
