In Cambodia, there are only 4,400 legally employed foreign workers ... all others are illegal workers

4,400 foreign workers legally employed in Cambodia

PHNOM PENH, Jun 26, 2008 (Xinhua) -- There are a total of 4,400 Chinese, Malaysian, Philippine and Thai workers currently working legally in Cambodia, English-Khmer language newspaper the Mekong Times Friday quoted ministry report as saying.

The majority of these foreign workers are employed in the garment, education, banking, catering and casino sectors, said the 2008 MLVT (the Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training) Report.

The presence of foreign laborers gives the nation the potential to benefit from foreign investment, said MLVT under secretary of state Oum Mean.

"We think that it is an indication of (Cambodia) moving into the globalization era, (where we will see) the exchange of labor, which will improve capacity, productiveness and potential in the society and the economy," he said.

Cambodia, as a developing nation, is in serious need of skilled foreign workers, who are expected to be vital in developing the country in the future, he said.

According to the Labor Law, foreigners who set up companies here are allowed to recruit 10 percent of their total workforce from their own countries, under the condition that Cambodian workers will replace them within a time limit.
