Hun Sen’s declaration that the CPP will peacefully transfer power to the winning party from the election was welcomed by the Sam Rainsy Party. Eng Chhay Eang, SRP Secretary-general, told The Mekong Times that: “This declaration is good for democracy, because we know that a number of Cambodian people are concerned should the SRP win the election because the ruling party may refuse to transfer power.” Eng Chhay Eang said that Hun Sen clearly confirms that, in Cambodia, regardless of the party in power, there is no problem for peaceful power transfer. Eng Chhay Eang added that the SRP would like to lead the country by itself if the SRP receives enough votes, i.e. the SRP will not cling to any party’s tail. Eng Chhay Eang indicated also that if the election is free and fair, the SRP will accept its results, however, if the election is fraught with cheating and it is not fair, the SRP and the voters will not accept the election outcome.
