Thai cabinet to approve map for Preah Vihear in spite of Thai military "dissatisfaction"

Sompong Sucharitkul, former Thai ambassador to The Hague, said the Kingdom had never admitted to Cambodia's sovereignty over the temple despite the International Court of Justice's ruling in 1962 in favour of Cambodia.
The Cabinet will endorse Cambodia's new map next week, enabling Phnom Penh to submit its proposal to the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) to list the Hindu temple of Preah Vihear as a World Heritage Site, Foreign Minister Noppadon Pattama said yesterday.

The military was reportedly dissatisfied with the new map Cambodia sent to Thailand as it encroached on some 10 metres of Thai territory.

"I have worked with Cambodia on the issue and there is no problem now," Noppadon told reporters. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and his deputy Sok An were very cooperative in settling the differences, he added.

Thailand and Cambodia have locked horns since Bangkok opposed Phnom Penh's plan to list the temple with 4.6 square kilometres of overlapping area claimed by both sides.

After several rounds of negotiations, Cambodia agreed last month to list only the temple and sent the new drawing of the proposed site for Thailand's consideration.

Residents in northeastern Si Sa Ket province protested, wanting the Cambodian community to be removed from overlapping areas.

Sompong Sucharitkul, former Thai ambassador to The Hague, said the Kingdom had never admitted to Cambodia's sovereignty over the temple despite the International Court of Justice's ruling in 1962 in favour of Cambodia.

The government should not commit to anything that could be deemed as recognition of Cambodia's sovereignty, said the former diplomat, who was close to the case when it was being considered by the court.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Tharit Charungvat said the government had handled the case with transparency and would not allow the country to lose any sovereignty over territory.

"We are working on the World Heritage issue, so please do not mix this up with other issues that could complicate the matter and create misunderstandings between the two countries," Tharit said.

It won't be surprised if Thailand and Vietnam made a deal behind Cambodia about how to handle Cambodia. Does anyone know Hanoi celebrated King of Thai's birthday last year. The Vietnamese honored King of Thailand by playing his musics.

Interested to see how they are going to eat up Cambodia. Their intentions from the past history is back.

Listen to this. Vietnam has at least one million troops for 85 million population. Thailand has more than half million troops for 65 milion people, and Thai troops are very elite. Cambodia? Only troops protecting Hun Sen's house.

Correct. Vietnam has around 4 million army not 1 millions, and Thai has around 1 million army.

The ICJ ruling is final even if Thailand does not admit it. It was technically under ICJ jurisdiction. Thai has a right to defend its interest but it should respect international law and the interests of Cambodia too.

What the International Law can do to stop Thai military not to invade Cambodia?

Who cares about a small country with less people in Cambodia?

Tell me something I don't know.

this article is a lie!

its a trap to make the press and the public believe that Cambodia has encroached on Thailand. In reality the new map means Cambodia has lost land!!!! The area around Preah Vihear iS KHMER LAND!!!!!!! Sok Ann and the current government must not GIVE AWAY MORE CAMBODIAN LAND. the 4.2 km is entitled to Cambodia.

Eic Campbell of ABC TV,Foreigns correspondent,quoted :

" Sok Kong is the King of Angkor "

Does Sok An care ?
Hun Sen care ?
Yuon-Hanoi owned the whole of Cambodia since January 7th,1979.
Does Yuon-Hanoi care about Prasath Preah Vihear ?

I'm certain a new coup is in the works; in fact ... with out a doubt, once the plan is choreographed and orchestrated and implemented, the whole political "equatation" will unequivocally change, which inevitably put the regional neighbors on the precipice of regional war politically -- initially, and then the military action could ensue.

i praise mr. noppadon for maintaining good neighborly policy with cambodia over this petty issue of preah vihear listing. the thai army is obviously meddling with the work of the foreign ministry in my opinion. this beg the questionos who is running the thai country, the army or the prime minister with his foreign minister's duty who actually deals with diplomatic ties of thailand with the rest of the world and cambodia is one of those countries in the world. army should not meddle with the foreign ministry duty! cambodia can see your true color, thailand!

I have no doubt that someone in the government must have granted him the authority to do so that would otherwiese impossible.

law is law, no buts about it. cambodian people never accepted the fact that thailand stole our old khmer provinces and vietcongs stole our mekong delta area or lower cambodia either to include koh tral. so there!

10:38am and 10:39am, do does china and the USA. does that mean china should invade and took over thailand and vietnam and the USA do the same? your statement is flaw and illogical and irrelevant. if the world super powers are thinking like you then the world would have peace on earth. it called respect other and treat others the way you would want to be treated, period. don't use population or armed strength as the world is not blind and will see your true color. to cambodia, the thai and the viet population means nothing to us, it the fostering of friendship and respect one another is what we look for, not aggression and show off like that. your kind of argument makes so sense, especially in modern day world, if you know what i mean!

Khmer King and Thai King are brothers who can't lived with one another. This is no reason to steal or to cut off the temple from the Khmer-Thai.

keep in mind too when you read any posting here, that it's a good idea to try to correct the english so it can make sense to you, the reader, on your own as i don't have time to always correct my typos, sometimes. it's called being smarter than the average bear! correct the sentence yourself as you read. i'm not english major. thanks
