PHNOM PENH, CAMBODIA: An Australian man who claimed he was carrying painkillers to treat a leg injury was sentenced to six years in prison for trying to smuggle nearly 1 1/2 ounces (40 grams) of methamphetamine out of Cambodia, a judge said Wednesday (9 July).

Phnom Penh Municipal Court Judge Chan Madina said she found Simon Peter Conway, 50, guilty of drug smuggling charges at a trial Tuesday (8 July). He was also ordered to pay a fine of 10 million riel (US$2,500), she said.

Police arrested Conway in October after finding methamphetamine power hidden in his clothes when he checked in for a flight to Australia at Phnom Penh international airport, the judge said.

Dun Vibol, the defense lawyer for Conway, of Perth, Western Australia, said his client intended to use the methamphetamines as a painkiller to treat an injury to his left leg.

Calling the sentence too harsh, Dun Vibol said he would appeal the guilty verdict.
