Cambodians vote amid corruption claims

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia, July 27 (UPI) -- Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen's party will likely win Sunday's parliamentary elections despite widespread graft, local businesspeople and others say.

The country's economy has improved and is growing by more than 10 percent annually, but that hasn't helped -- and maybe even worsened -- the nation's endemic culture of public corruption, The Los Angeles Times reported.

"When things start to boom, people start to get a little more greedy," John Brinsden, vice chairman of locally owned Acleda Bank, told the newspaper. Even with a growing middle class, rising food and fuel prices are threatening to reverse some of the recent growth, he added.

Hun Sen and his Cambodian People's Party have been accused by foreign and domestic critics of running a patronage system and tolerating a culture of corruption. He and the country's 11 opposition parties maintain they support reform efforts, but there are no detailed plans or responses to requests government officials and military leaders disclose their assets, the Times reported.

They quietly claimed it since before the election was over; the big dog of Hun Sen, Khiev Kanharith has admitted that the CPP commits fraud all along to win the election.

I promise not to financially support Rainsy and Kem Sokha anymore, because without the Unity, only Khmer people are sufferings.

corruption is a routine for a poor country like cambodia. you cant blame people for wanting to get rich and you cant blame the government for failure to suddently stop coruption either. however I expect to see a stronger democracy as time goes.. and eventualy, the norm will disappear as the nation developed.

That's bullshit! You got to open your eye and examine the personalities and their state of mind of these low-educated who get a chance to rule the country. People like these will never let anything get out of their hands because they know for sure that they will never have a chance to get to where they are now in millions of years. This is the only golden opprtunity that they maust hold on to it no matter what. Whithout Vietname collaboration with them, they would have do the farming work in Prey Veng and Kompongcahm until now.

Can someone help clarify something for me.

I understand that in this election, if you win 62 seat, can form the government by yourself based on the 50+1 formula. However, it appeared that each parties is also stressing the important of a 2/3 majority. Is it becuae you need a 2/3 majority of votes to pass any law, etc... in Parliament?

Thanks

trust me , they will die before you if you are younger. no matter how bad it would get , we have eyes and ears everywhere. Eventualy, they will give up... eventualy , it will die out.. the day I am dreaming for every individual khmer can live together in peace and respect the law will eventualy , and slowly come to reality.

God Bless Cambodia ..God bless you.. good luck all

I agreed about SRP and Khem Sokha. They run on similar platform and looking from the outside, I just don't understand why they can't unite to run against the CPP if they truly wants to work for the nation. I'm not a CPP supporter, but will also would like to see a unite Khmer. We still need a strong opposition party to keep a check and balance on the ruling party. It is the only way a true democratic country can work and to server all the people.

From my poor point of view, I think Kem Sokha is so confident in himself, that's why he did not join the SRP. Kem Sokha must be the one who should limp in first, not Sam Rainsy, because the HRP is weaker than the SRP.

SRP won Pailin votes

curruptions is nothing new in cambodian way of life, election, and politics.

The question is there any violation for these kind of actions? If this country consider a democracy nation.

The CPP, have no shame for their lack of education, for stealing, cheating, killings, serving their hanoi master.

SRP party has been longer in the fight against the cpp. HRP, khem sokha, is a new party just want to be in the fight for personal gain, in my opinion.

cheating has become more and more sublte. voter names delete4d by NEC the last minutes. a lot of cpp agents ago around surveying who support oppostion. 200k voters got kicked out in pp alone, relaced by milions of yuon voters.

wow, khmer democracy. why bargain with the siem for a block ofland in pvh ? why not say so all along when the yuon never cease to steal khmer land ? and pvh is not teh first plot of land the siem stole, but plwnty of other spots along the border.

Whatever you guys say about the CCP and Hun Sen, it is reality that none of the opposition parties can do better in the election. Too many of them and they confused people how are looking for alternative. I think all the opposition parties should merge and create a new and strong opposition party. By the way, the new party should not be named after anybody, like the Sam Rainsy Party. Until all leaders of all opposition parties think that country and other people first before wanting to be king themselves, I think CPP will win again next time. I stop wasting my money to support Sam, Keo, Ranarith, or however anymore. All I see they do good is just like the CPP - buying lands near mine in Sihanoukville. Where is the money from? Perhaps, a few hundreds from me who has supported them many year now for nothing.

there will be no war. Hun Sen created the chaos to be sure that he won the election. Now, we know that Hun Sen has hit double home run - 1) Won the election 2) Big business with his Thai buddies/YUON WOULD ALSO GAIN MORE PROFITS.

HANOI/YUON WOULD MAKE SURE THAT HUN SEN WOULD NOT TAKE THE CASE TO ASEAN AND/OR UN. WHY? KHMER WOULD HAVE A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY IF WE WERE ALLOWED TO TAKE THE CASE TO UN, BECAUSE EVERYTHING ELSE WOULD FOLLOW. BUT NO, WE WON'T HAVE THE CHANCE. HUN SEN MAY BE THE PRIME MINISTER BUT THE REAL PERSONS WHO HOLD THE STEERING WHEEL ARE THE YUON HANOI.

Don't believe? You will see in a couple of weeks.

It is so sad that We Khmer are so hyped up with the issue of Preah Vihear Temple. We and the world know that Preah Vihear Temple has been ours. WE SHOULD HAVE SPENT MORE TIME ON THE ELECTION.

"IT WAS A CLEAN-CUT POLITICAL MANEUVER HUN SEN AND HIS GOVERNMENT CREATED". TIME AND TIME, HUN SEN AND HIS CRONIES ARE ENJOYING TO FOOL ALL OF YOU.

So what will be next? Bragging, talking, accusing each other, mine, yours, them!

Bragging and bragging! Used to be the older generations and now has spreaded to the younger generation, brag and brag!
